I was going to recommend the VW – we have a TDI Passat, and it gets great mileage and is incredibly roomy! My mom also loves her CR-V, and you can probably get a pretty good deal on a used ones – Honda’s last and last, too.

somethingbee:  I like the Honda Fits, I don’t have one, but that is definitely our next car.  We currently have a Hyundai Elantra which gets great gas mileage, but not big on fitting drumsets 🙁

I personally would stay away from audi/VW if reliability is important. Ive heard nothing but trouble from those cars, my last car (audi a6) included. The dash was constantly lit up like a Christmas tree! Lol I traded it in for a 2014 Hyundai Elantra, it surprisingly has a lot of room and gets great gas mileage.

Another Subaru Outback vote. We love ours and got a factory-certified used (2011) model for about $20,000. Depends where you live, though — we are in a really snowy place, so the 4WD & other features were a big draw for us. If you don’t need all that, you might be able to find something less expensive that suits you.

They’re great, reliable cars, though — check them out!

I have a Subaru Crosstrek and LOVE it!  I paid $24k for it brand new with all the bells and whistles.  It gets about 35mpg and is a champ in the snow.  If I had to buy another new car right now, I would buy my exact same one.  It is a bit smaller than the Outback but still has tons of room.  We go camping a lot and it works great for holding all our gear and my kayak.

somethingbee:  yeah, VW and audi are the same company so they have similar issues. My Audi lasted for 185k miles but that was with lots of major repairs. I don’t miss it for a second!

I have a 2012 Ford Escape and it has a ton of space in the “trunk” the back seats fold down also if needed. It averages 30 MPG for me. I LOVE this suv and am so glad I decided to get it! Ive never owned a Ford vehicle before but am very pleasantly surprised. I bought it preowned and only paid 10K for it! (my payments are less than $200/month!!!)  I got a great deal!

I have a Chevy cruze.  The trunk isn’t bad idk about a drum set?  Try it out.  The gas mileage is great!

somethingbee:  My husband has a Honda Fit and it has a TON of cargo space. He used to use it for schlepping his band gear around, too.
