I know the odds are slim to none but rent the runway seems to have gotten so popular lately. I’m going to a black tie wedding at the end of September and looking into renting because I have no need to purchase a gown. I found a beautiful colorful gown on RTR that I’m wanting but for some reason I’m nervous someone else will rent it too! It has a lot of reviews and comes up on the front page when I search, plus it’s a brighter dress/print that would definitely be noticed if there were duplicates. Has anyone experienced this before?

The chances are very very minimal and besides, it really shouldn’t bother you if you’re in the same dress as someone else. Two people showed up in the same dress as me to prom- we got an awesome picture out of it and then went and had fun. Nbd.

Not at the same event, although I’ve seen different people in the same RTR dress at different events. Some designs are definitely more popular than others.
I used to love RTR, but I’m kind of cooling on the service, tbh. You can buy the same exact dresses for lower than the price of one rental at a sample sale or maybe even a department store sale.

What I love about RTR is that I can get a dress that won’t clutter up my closet. I have military balls annually and it’s nice to rent instead of having to add to my closet every year with a new dress. Especially since the expectations are for formal attire at military balls and I don’t particularly want 17 formal dresses in my closet that I wear once.

Assuming the dress you want actually arrives and is not damaged.

FantasticFawn : what other reasons are you cooling on it? I’ve been considering renting a dress for my bridal shower? Thx!

libralove55 : A couple other reasons. I rented a dress from there for my bridal shower too, and while it was beautiful, it wasn’t cleaned well — there was a stain on the back of the (white) skirt that looked exactly like period blood….so gross, and it definitely wasn’t me because I wasn’t on my period at the time. Luckily my cousin noticed it before I left the house and I ended up wearing the backup size, but it was a little too big for me. I feel like I’m playing roulette every time I order from there because the dresses may or may not be in wearable condition when they arrive (stains, rips, stuck zippers, missing hooks), and they’re not great with finding alternate options on the day of your event. Also, a few of my friends have had issues with orders not being delivered on time and dresses being unavailable at the last minute, again with no decent backup options. I also don’t like how they keep jacking up their prices.
RTR is a case of a business getting too big too quickly, IMO. They were great when they first started c. 2009/2010 — I used to order from them all the time back then with no problems, but not any longer. I think they started going downhill when they began offering RTR Unlimited and options other than occasion dresses.

FantasticFawn : gross! I ordered a romper for my bachelorette and its white – praying that doesn’t happen to me!

I haven’t but I know a lot of people in my area don’t use this service

I use RTR a lot but have had dresses that are not cleaned well. The best way to prevent that is to rent the newer dresses– some of these dresses have been rented since 2010.
Luckily, if I ever have issues the Chicago store is around the corner from me. I always try on the dress in store and they will exchange it with any dress the have available.
I see RTR dresses a lot at events but never the same one.

FantasticFawn : thank you, so good to know

I ended up at an event with another girl who had the same dress in a different color. We laughed about it, both said we used RTR, and moved on. No big deal!

I’ve never seen someone wearing the same dress as me. I love rent the runway and everytime I rent a dress I get SO many compliments! I’ve rented from them probably close to 10 different times and have never had an issue with the quality or cleaning. Everything has always looked brand new for me.

Used to be a huge fan, but I received one too many damaged dresses. I’ve definitely been to events where several women had on RTR dresses, including someone who had on the exact same dress as me.
Several of my coworkers do their monthly subscription for cute work clothes. They seem to love it.

I use it quite often for weddings and I HAVE had someone else wear the same dress (also rented)! Thankfully, we both thought it was funny, and we both styled it differently, but I know even when you buy a dress from some place like Nordstroms, you run the risk of someone else finding the same dress!
