So, we live in a 70 year old piece of crap rental in a sketchy part of town. When I moved, it was what was available when I needed something and the only thing I could afford. It sucks, it hasn’t been well maintained, its far from EVERYTHING, the neighborhood scares me, and the kitchen is a joke, an oven from the 50s that burns everything, a stove that barely boils water, no disposal, no dishwasher, and a grand total of 4 cabinets/ 2 square feet of counter space. The hot water heater takes forever and if ONE of us has taken a lukewarm shower, the other gets a cold one. The pipes from the sewer lines in the house to where they conncect to the street weren’t done correctly so every couple months they get clogged, and back up into my shower and OUT FROM UNDER THE TOILET. The central heat/air was a retro-fit (obviously) with the whole unit taking up most of one of the two tiny cloests in the entire house, and the ducts condensate into the ceiling so there is water damage/ a huge chunk of paint from the ceiling gone where the ducts run in the living room. They re-did the floors in the main living areas to laminate that looks like wood, which is fine but the fact that I think the subfloor is messed up because it sags in places. The “tile” in the kitchen and the bathroom needs serious help, the kitchen has a HUGE guage in the center of the floor down into the plywood subfloor, and the bathroom floor has water damage I think. Oh and the fact that they replaced the tub/shower at some point with the cheapest crap they could, sealed horrifically, there is caulk everywhere and didn’t use a bathroom paint so it is peeling all over the shower. 2/4 rooms have the original windows that are warped and leak enough that it gets down to like 45 degrees at night in the rooms when its cold outside if we don’t have the space heater constantly running. This summer it was 90 INSIDE the house when it was 110 outside. And NONE of the windows have screens so since we live in Texas with a billion types of bugs and flying things, the windows cant be opened. Oh, and I moved in to a roach/flea problem. Fixed the fleas but there are still WAAAYYYYY too many roaches for me (none would be good!). This house would NEVER pass an inspection, but he keeps renting it to college kids who just need some place they can afford.
It sucks, because there is no middle grown on rental houses around us. Its a college town so there are LOTS of apartments, but I love having space, not sharing walls and mostly having a yard for our dog. I found a PERFECT rental house, it is available when our current lease is up, the kitchen is WONDERFUL, newly renovated, a fenced yard, great location, beautiful wood floors, amazing layout, and is over twice our current lease. 🙁 Everything we can afford is junky or in a place where quite frankly we would get shot because we lack enough melanin in our skin to blend in. The ones we would actually like to live in are insane exspensive for us. It doesn’t help that while we both work, we are also both still full time students so cash flow is limited extremely. I graduate in December and should hopefully get a “grown up” real paying job, but that doesn’t help in the 6 months between our current lease ending and when I finally get a job. And I totally get it, I should be happy that we have a house at all, but it just kind of sucks being stuck here with no options for moving anytime soon. I am so sick of a crap old house, I just want to be done with school and get my real job so we can move!
Sorry, I am feeling extra sorry for myself right now after I ran out of hot water to wash dishes with because Darling Husband took a shower. Again. And more paint fell off the ceiling. And the police sirens were going off again.
