Have you ever rented a car while traveling in Mexico? Would you do it again?
We’re trying to decide this right now. The honeymoon is in the Playa Del Carmen area, but we’re actually staying at 3 different hotels during our time there. (One in Playa, one in Tulum, and one on Cozumel.)
At least for the first 2 parts of the trip, we’d like to explore the area and go sightseeing a few times, but would love avoiding all the group tour fees/shuttle/car fees, etc.
However, neither one of us has ever been to Mexico and we don’t really know the driving laws. I’ve read people say that its fine and easy to adapt and I’ve read stories where people were arrested for fender benders.
So if you’ve rented there before, how did it go?

@Roe: we’ve rented cars in mexico quite a few times. no major probems. i can reccommend some rental places if you want. the driving is very easy along this coast. only 1 main highway and signs for most of the hotels. what do you want to know? we have a house here in mexico so i am on that coast all of the time. you can pm me if you want.

I would suggest calling your insurance company and seeing if what kind of coverage you will have when driving in a different country!

@kerensa: your insurance from another country will not apply in mexico. it will be included in your car rental. you will need a valid drivers license of course.

Me and my friends are doing it this July in Playa…they’ve done it before with no troubles.

@Roe: I’ve done it twice…but drive conservatively and hope for the best!!!!! The police pulled us over for no reason and told us that we had to give them $100 or else they would take us to jail. WTF?? There is so much corruption in Mexico I’m not certain I’d return.

I haven’t been the renter but we have as family, didn’t seem like a big deal. And having been to that area I would 150% recommend renting a car, SO much to see but it’s all very spread out! We rented pne when we were there and went all over the place! Not to mention you could drive yourself fbetween each location you are staying at
Id do some digging in tripadvisor.com, you’ll get lots of review and advise from travelers.

I rented an old “punch buggie” convertible in Cozumel for the day. We were on a cruise and wanted to explore. Best $50 I’ve ever spent. We drove around the island on a big loop and made stops along the way. So much fun! The best advice I can give you is not to go with any vendors of the “main strip” wherever you are. I speak Spanish so it helped to not get ripped off.

@bigcitybee: Yeah, thats what I’m afraid of. I also read that if you get into a fender bender, they put you in jail if you are at fault and do not have insurance. Were you in the Cancun area when this happened?
