We used vacationrentals.com for a Finger Lakes trip. It worked out very well. I like your idea of a vacation home in Hawaii. I bet it saves so much and you have the benefit of a kitchen, lots of space to stretch out and a little less touristy.

I rented on vrbo.com in Oahu a couple of years ago for a friend’s destination wedding.  We rented an apartment in Honolulu without issue and his family rented a huge (pretty stunning house) from a different owner south of the city where it’s nicer.  So I can highly recommend vrbo.com, but each owner will be different.  I’d recommend taking a few preferred hotels info with you just in case for backup, but I doubt you’d need it.

My husband works for a company called FlipKey, which rents out vacation homes…. so I can vouch for that company. 🙂

I’ve used both of them, but not for Hawaii.  We’ve rented homes in Florida several times and in Temecula, CA.  My in-laws rented a house via homeaway.com for their time here for our wedding last year.  All experiences have been good ones so far.  🙂
