Hey…so Darling Husband cousin who is a very good friend, very nice guy and friends with both of us needs a cheaper place to stay in our area for about 6 months in order to accept a new job and get on his feet. I will be going on mat leave and the extra cash of him moving into our basement would really help out. He said he can’t pay standard rent (to rent a 1 bed, 1 bath in our area is about $950-1100 depending on utilities being included), but can pay a little and help out with things we need done. He use to have a landscape business and we desperately need landscaping help along with a few other handyman things around the house.
We have a raised ranch so 2 basement bedrooms, living room and own washroom…but they aren’t standard basement rooms the windows are completely above ground and are huge…2 of him could fit through one of the windows. So they are nice. He would have a private washroom, bedroom and living room space. He would have to use our kitchen but he admits he doesn’t cook alot and usually just makes pasta on a hot plate or soup in a microwave.
He is extremely clean, he washes everything down and a really nice guy.
What would you charge him for rent? I was thinking $300 plus he helps cut grass/clears snow and we can agree to landscape work like planting shrubs we need etc. He was actually offering to help in these ways to offset the rent and the extra $300 would take the pressure off during mat leave.
Ideas? Thoughts? Too little money? Not enough?
