I recently ate at The Coachman, it was really good (located in SOMA), but had a noisy atmosphere. I’d recommend checking out Off the Grid too, http://offthegridsf.com/markets.

There is a lot of great food in the city it really depends on what type of cuisine and atmosphere you’re looking for, and since you’re staying in Union Square transport to different areas is a breeze.

MrsT2009: you need to make ressies STAT. Foreign Cinema is really tough to get into. Check out The View lounge at the Marriot in SOMA — 360 degree views of the city.

Also, Slanted Door. Amazing Vietnamese food!

The Grove in SOMA has a great california style brunch.

Not too many great restaurants in union square as its super touristy. I would recommend going to the embracedero area which is a slightly longer walk but still doable. Kokkari – upscale Greek, Chaya – Japanese/ French fusion, coqetta – Spanish tapas. The one in union square that I actually like is the Cavalier.

Depends on your budget, but we recently went to SF and had the most outrageously good dinner at Bourbon Steak. Granted it was a huge splurge of a dinner and we ended up ordering $80 wagyu steaks… but seriously best steak I’ve ever had, hands down, by a long shot. And I’m from Texas and live in Chicago, so we eat fantastic steaks somewhat regularly.

For less of a splurge, we also had a wonderful dinner at Hops and Hominy. The service left a bit to be desired (as I found the service in SF does in general), but the food was fantastic. It was southern food, and it was freaking delicious.

Wayfare Tavern! State Bird is amazing, a little far from Union Square but well worth the trip. I’ve been dying to try Brothers & Sisters, but haven’t had a chance. Town Hall is really good too, and 83 Proof is fun for drinks.
