@claireos: My hubby works retail, so I feel your pain. 🙁 He was supposed to be off on Black Friday after talking to his boss almost a year in advance, and she has now informed him that he has to be at work at 2:30 a.m. on Black Friday. So that kind of screws our plans to go visit my family for Thanksgiving. Just want you to know you’re not alone. HUGS.

Sorry to hear.  Is there anything you could do to get a schedule more similar to his?

The restaurant world is quite consuming… I think it is for this reason that a lot of couples both work in the same place or at least in the same industry.

I feel you!  SO works an average of 66 hours a week (we worked his hours out).  His minimum is 40 but sometimes it’s 110 hours.  He’s looking for a new job because at the moment we just have no time for anything.  His boss told him that if he wanted more reasonable hours he should have kids – I was furious that this was the boss’s genuine solution to the problem.

@ladyartichoke: That is the most absurd thing I have ever heard in my life!! You know if he had kids, then the boss would say that he shouldn’t expect to have a family life working in the retail or restaurant industry. How frustrating!

Darling Husband used top work in a restaurant and we had opposite shifts. So I feel your pain. It was hard to get any holidays off because the KP always wanted them off herself and since she was such terrible person he was the onyl person who lasted more than a few months. He still works a different shift, but I see him more often at his new job.

I feel for you. I’m going to be going to hairstyling school which is Tues-Sat sand my job will probably be the same when I’m done school. Fiance is full time navy reserves so he’ll be away a lot but even when he’s ashore we’ll have one weekend day together and that stinks. I don’t look forward to it at all!

My daughter just got married to a wonderful young man who is a wine sommelier in a very exclusive restaurant in S. Florida. He works so hard and such crazy hours. She hardly ever sees him. But, it’s what he has to do. He gets paid well and the schedule allows him to take college classes during the day so he can finish his degree. He doesn’t get sick or vacation days or even health insurance. His schedule always gets changed at the last minute. If a celebrity comes in close to closing, the restaurant stays open until…. whenever. He came home the other day and plunged his feet into ice water because they hurt so badly. He eats on the run. It’s just terrible how hard people in the restaurant business work and how some are treated by management.

I was raised and worked in the restaurant business before I jumped into IT. And it was HORRIBLE. I was always working so late, too many hours. My then relationship took the toll of it, and I have since then changed my work, which I am happy for. I do understand you, cause I was on the other side of it aswell. I feel you. It will be better. HUGS!

I feel your pain, OP. Missing someone sucks. I’m sorry, vent away!
