I’ve ordered a bunch of dresses from online department stores, because a) I’m frugal and don’t want to spend $1000+ on a dress and b) I live in the boonies so it’s way easier.

It’s awesome!  They come, you try them on in the relaxation of your own home, there are free returns, etc.

(You can also look through “evening gowns” and “prom dresses” sections for white dresses that are appropriate for a wedding.)

@lolot: I ordered a few dresses online and tried them on at home before going to an actual dress shop. It got me comfortable actually putting one on and it’s wonderfully convenient when they offer free returns/shipping.

I ordered a TON of dresses from Macy’s and Ann Taylor.  It was great.  you can prance around your house and try on at your leisure.  Ordered them last weekend, they were delivered by Thursday, and in the mail to be returned today.  Easy peasy.  Although the HubsToBe hated having all the boxes in the hallway for a few days.  🙂

I ordered a J.Crew dress (Taryn) and was very unhappy with it. The material looked dingy and the quality of the entire dress was poor.

I ended up purchasing a dress from Nordstrom that I am very happy with. It was the opposite from J.Crew in that it looks better in person! Only $158!!

I ordered a dress from Ann Taylor and decided to return it.   It took FOREVER for the return to go through.  Like 2 weeks maybe just to get confirmation from them that they had the return, and then another couple of days to see it on my credit card.  Just something to think about if you do order from them (they don’t have any physical stores).  Jcrew does have stores in certain cities, if there is one near you I would definitely make a visit.  I think when it comes to wedding dresses most of us are vastly more picky so it is harder to just order something online and have it work out well.

I’ve worked for Ann Taylor Loft before, btw, and the company policy is that you can return online purchases in store. You may want to call and check if that’s true about wedding dresses also, but it should be.

@graceolivia89:  you cannot return in the store.  I had several notes in my box this week saying that Bridal returns were only processed through the mail.  The prepaid label cost about $8.00 to process.

@MsCoffeeBean:  although I imagine an $8 risk is probably worth it for that comfort-of-your-own-home feeling. I went the traditional route but definitely like some of those Ann dresses 🙂

@graceolivia89:  Ha!  I also ended up going the traditional route and got one in a store.  Of course this perfect dress was found in the time it took the AT ones to process and ship, so they weren’t even opened.  Just my luck 🙂
