I was having a little spotting two days ago and called my dr so they did a blood type to find I am O-. Today they’re asking me to return for a Rhogam shot. From what I can find online, it seems a little early for this, right? Did anyone else have to get an injection so early in pregnancy?

Uh…. I’m A- and they said not to get the shot until 27 weeks. I also spotted around 8 weeks. I wonder why they’re having you do it so early?

This information mentions also giving rhogam after a threatened miscarriage to prevent sensitization.

I wondered if it were for the threatened miscarriage thing too. Right after I miscarried I remember my OB saying something like “You’re O+ so we don’t need to worry about Rhogam” and after seeing @julies1949: link it makes sense.
I absolutely don’t want to freak you out at all, because I had light spotting early in pregnancy and with many follow ups things afterward were okay. My miscarriage was way beyond that point with no spotting for weeks. I’d say they might just be trying to be over cautious. Hopefully the whole thing will be irrelevant in the end with your healthy pregnancy, but maybe call your Dr. for clarification and explain you thought this typically happened later on?

Rhogam also isn’t dangerous at all, so you’ll just get another shot later in your pregnancy as planned. Better to be cautious!
