Worst I had was my cousin, who custom designed dresses that were $250 (okay, reasonable) but boasted that there were free alterations. The catch?  We needed to get on a plane and fly to the seamstress for these “free” alterations. Just a plane ticket, NBD. (Side note: After I booked my non-refundable flight, the seamstress eloped to Germany. However, situation ended up resolving itself.)

BUT I instantly thought of this article when I saw your post: http://gawker.com/this-terrifying-bride-is-only-joking-except-when-shes-1343098715

ETA: The custom-designed dresses weren’t anything spectacular– definitely could have found something similar at David’s– and no, the seamstress wouldn’t ship them to me for alterations nearby.

In 3 weeks (ie in February) I have to wear these shoes. For a winter wedding. In Manitoba. In February. With a floor length chiffon dress.  Chiffon. In Feb. Thankfully that’s as crazy as it’s gotten with my friends.

emitchell456:  One time the bride just didnt notice how much money wanted us to spend. $250 on a bridesmaids dress, $700 on a weekend Vegas trip for her bachelorette  (she wanted the venitian or palazzo…..nothing less), pay for plane tickets to fly in for a “brideamaids weekend” so we could choose bm dresses and then if course fly to the wedding and get her a gift. It was just so much money. Over $2000 to be a bridesmaid! Thats crazy.

The bride wanted me to get my curls relaxed! As in putting sodium hydroxide on my head! I love my curls and she wanted me to have my hair straight for all the wedding events. I have really long thick curly hair where it takes upwards of 7 hours to straighten my hair. And even then it isn’t really as straight as she would want it to be. So she wanted me to put a relaxer in my hair. That would cause damage for years to come on my curls! She also demanded i go to every drerss hunt she had problem is I live 3,000 miles from her. We were close friends and I had to opt out of being in the wedding as I just couldn’t make it to all the dress appointments she had like 12! She wanted our friend who is a natrual red head to dye her hair brown to match the other bms. and the bridesmaid dresses were $700!  She the bride was a mess.

I had a crazy friend that wanted us to be “unofficial bridesmaids”… so we were just guests (she wanted to entire spotlight on her, no one else standing up at the altar) but she wanted us to wear matching dresses and wanted tattoos covered for pictures. She kept asking favors like we were actual bridesmaids- she wanted us to make decorations and set them up/take them down later, she needed help with finding venue/catering/etc. She used a lot of guilt trips, it was weird, she cried when anyone said no. She really flipped when we refused to learn a dance lol he husband has a tough life ahead! We would have done everything for her just b/c we’re friends, but she acted like it was our duty and ordered us around. We really felt stupid wearing matching dresses as ‘just guests’.

emitchell456:  6 bridesnmaids. Dresses were custom-made and hideous. Bride went from being the laid-back, mellow and very caring friend to a psycho because of Mother-In-Law. Dresses were VERY VERY unforgiving – as in size 0/2 BMs were worried about them fitting if we ate anything. Bride made all BMs promise that we would not put on any weight until after wedding was over (dresses were ordered 9 months before wedding). Oh, and hair had to match – friend with gorgeous curly locks has to chemically straighten her hair to match the rest of us. If it wasn’t such a shitshow, it would have been funny.

sumshine.dawn:  It was a while ago but I think she ended up caving and did some Japanese straightening thing to it?

On the upside, that nightmare was a good WHAT NOT TO DO guide for me when I picked my BMs for our wedding haha.

I had a bride tell all of us that if our hair turned out too “prom like” we wouldn’t be allowed in pictures (this was in retaliation for us choosing to get our hair done by someone other than her hairdresser for half the price she suggested – the bride insisted on updos but made us pay).

She also appointed a bridesmaid as “hairmaster” and we got to pick from a list of 12 hairstyles and they were all subject to her final approval.

I could go on…

Yikes. The curly hair being straightened requirement makes me cringe. That would be enough to make me bow out. I haven’t straightened my hair in 10 years and am not going to just for someone’s wedding. Fortunately, all my friends who would ask me to be a bridesmaid know better than to ask me that.
