My dad has requested the pogues, fairytale in new york be our dance song. He is adamant about it. Sure, we love that song and rock out every Christmas to it, but at my wedding!!!!!!! Take a listen below (It has the lyrics so you will understand even more where I am coming from!):
Now this is funny haha, I’m sorry!! You should be able to explain to your dad that you do not want the words “slut”, “fa**ot” and “scumbag” to be spoken at any point on your wedding day and that the father/daughter dance will be such big moment of focus for everyone that these lyrics will definitely be noticed and will take away from your beautiful moment together. If he really, really can’t be swayed, then you definitely need to try to fade out those lyrics. I would be so shocked (and tickled) by hearing this at a wedding that it would literally be the only thing I’d talk about afterwards! You don’t want that!
Hahahaha, thats awesome. I love that song, and I think partly because just how inappropriate it is for most settings.
But, yeah, you really can’t dance to that. Maybe it can get played at some part of the reception (like cocktail hour) and you can take a moment to have a drink with your dad? And dance to something else?
That is the verse that I just cnat get over. I cannot be pretty much called a slut at our wedding!!! Hahah! My dad just thinks its a riot and its his favorite song, and he thinks everyone will think its just wonderful!! Gahhhhhhhh. I just keep laughing because things are getting stranger by the minute with this wedding!!!!
I know this is a serious problem for you but reading these lyrics is somewhat commical. Your dad/family seem like they would be a hoot if this is what you jam at family christmas. I am sure that explaining to your dad that maybe this just isn’t the best father daughter dance song will take a while. but be persistent. he should come around and understand. Good luck
I agree with GroovyHippieChick, I think an instrumental version might be a good compromise. It’s clear that your father wants to dance to this song becuase it is attached to many special memories. Is there another song like that, that is a bit more PG? Nonetheless, I know it must be difficult, my father wants to sing a duet with me for my wedding. I love him to death, and even though we both sing it feels as if it will be super awkard. I can certainly relate to you right now! I hope it all sorts itself out! 🙂
