I’m in a rush to get my ring appraised before I go on vacation in 2 weeks. Hopefully also get seprate insurance on it rather than use my home insurance rider claim -if something were to happen.
How did you ladies go about finding someone to appraise your ring? I found one place on jewelers row in Philly but that was like $200!!! Is that normal?

Could you go to the jeweler you purchased it from? Generally you’re supposed to get an appraisal when you purchase the ring. For all three rings I got, I got an appraisal with each one without asking. If you bought it online could you contact the website and request one?
If not, the best thing to do is go to a respected local jeweler.

I’m from the philadelphia dealer, there are so many places I could go I just don’t know where to start to look first.
Fiance got my ring from Kay’s and they told us they don’t do appraisals.

I got mine appraised at the store that we got it from. It’s a mall jewelry store, and once a month they have an appraiser come in for the day.
Even if Kay’s doesn’t do appraisals, a local jewelry should. You’ll just have to call around.

Perfect circle from Jewelers mutual allowed me to use the receipts for my setting and diamond for insurance coverage. They generally require an appraisal for items over 5k, but they did not give me a problem and the appraisal was super inflated anyways.
Also, check the policy you choose to buy, some homeowners have a lot of stipulations. I know my insurance covers worldwide – loss, stolen, damage, mysterious disappearance etc.

I just had my ring appraised ($50 but I’m in a suburban area) and our jeweler recommended Perfect Circle from Jeweler’s Mutual as well. The appraisal I received from our local jeweler was similar to the one we received from Blue Nile, where we purchased my ring. Give Perfect Circle a call – the associate I spoke with was very helpful and explained the finer points of the policy. As LoveLikeCrazy said above, homeowners’ insurance will not necessarily cover everything you think it should, especially accidental loss.
ETA: According to the associate assisting me, the Perfect Circle policy takes immediate effect. Hope that helps!

Beautyandthebusiness: Just like you did with your ring, shop around! If you don’t mind driving a bit, perhaps you could check out jewlers in the suburbs outside of Philly. They might be cheaper(?) Call around. I live in the DC area, which is a comparable area, and I was quoted $85 for the first ring, $75 for the second, etc. but I went outside the beltway/metro area.

Beautyandthebusiness: My Darling Husband got it appraised when he bought the ring. We got a separate insurance plan specifically for my ring.
