I recently met a new friend from China. I don’t know him that well, so I don’t konw a lot about his personal life. He wears a wedding band so I assumed he is married.
Well, last friday he joined us for drinks and then said he’s off to China the next day to get married. He told us about some of his plans and I was amazed— so many different dinners and things he has to plan. and so much money spent. wow! it sounds amazing.
well, anyway, I totally forgot to ask him – why was he wearing a ring if he’s not married yet? I won’t get to see him for a month, so I thought I’d ask the bee. can anyone answer this? or maybe it is just a decision he made for his own personal reasons? I tried googling it but couldn’t find an answer.

I answered in the other post and then it disappeared. LOL! But, maybe he is wearing it as an engagement ring?

whoops– sorry! WB duplicated my thread.
yeah, that’s what I was thinking. I was trying to figure out if it’s customary.

I remember reading that in some places, one hand means they’re engaged and they switch the ring to the other hand when they’re married. Could be that.

ok, this is a totally old thread but I finally found out the answer– it turns out my friend was already married (for legal reasons) before the big ceremony he had in China. since it was not a secret, he wore his band. I don’t know him very well, so I didn’t know he was already married!
dur!

Ahaha. I was going to post the answer, but I didn’t realize how late I was. This is a custom I recently learned about too. I got engaged on the same day as my dad’s friend’s daughter, but in China, you basically go from the proposal to filing your paperwork. Sometime in the future, you have a big banquet to celebrate. I guess their banquet will be this summer and they’re inviting hundreds of people. 😀

@Sutaru: they recently had their big banquet. according to his description, it was massive, spanned several days, and was insanely expensive! I can’t wait to see pictures of it!
