Perhaps he could use your nanny’s ring and bring it to a jeweler to have them create something unique to you, but with the sentiment that it carries for you of your grandfather?

I agree with 7SEVENJ9, have him turn the setting into something different for the two of you!

@jo.lee: Agreed too! I think incorporating the old ring into a new one would be an excellent way to cherish family heirlooms and still start a fresh page with you and your Fiance 🙂

Could he incorporate your nanny’s stones with the stone/setting he wants to buy you?

Honestly, IMO, if he wants to purchase you a new ring – let him!  That is really important to some guys and trying to force him to use an heirloom ring when he really wants to get something that is strictly yours could really hurt him.  I’d let him know that you’d prefer a smaller / less flashy / etc ring and throw out the idea to him of creating a new setting for your nanny’s diamond – but if he doesn’t really go for the idea, let it go.

What about if you use grandmom’s ring as an engagment ring now, and he can continue to save up and give you your second engagment ring once he is able to purchase something he is comfortable with.  That way, you’ll be engaged, he will be happy giving you something he earned and you’ll have a wonderful engagement and right hand ring!
