Hello bees – I obviously need some help! I have been engaged for 3 weeks and my engagement ring has already lost a diamond. I took it into the jeweler, it’s being taken care of … no worries there. However, I am obviously tough on rings!
The diamond that was lost was one of the last diamonds in the row… if you look at the picture, there is a row of 7 stones… it was one of the last, and therefore the smallest.
Does anyone have some good advice on how to keep rings healthy? Cleaners to use or not to use… little tricks to make sure all is well?

I am sorry you lost a diamond. It was probably not set right when you got it and/or the prongs were loose. I suggest that you take it in to your jeweler at least once a month to make sure the prongs are tight. If you continue to have the problem, you may want to consider getting a different setting for your diamonds.

advice from my FI’s jeweler mother – take it off when you sleep: sleep wears on jewelry more than you’d think; for cleaning, brush it down with an old (soft) toothbrush to get grime away, and clean it with ammonia (do a bit of research and see if it needs to be diluted – i can’t remember right now for some reason).
that’s about all i can think of right now… for basics! hope it helps?

I agree with noritake22, the diamond was probably already a bit loose when you got it. A regular maintenance schedule is ideal. If your fiance bought the insurance or extended plan for it they probably will check it out for free. Good luck, oh and beautiful ring 🙂

Thanks ladies – good advice! I did take it right in and it’s being fixed free of charge. I remember my grandma cleaning her rings with amonia… sounds like I should send an email her way!
Thanks a ton!

What a shame. Were you able to find the diamond that came loose?

No, unfortunately… I work outside so I am sure it’s in the snow somewhere.
