This does happen sometimes. Was your original diamond certified? Do you have any paperwork on it, or would you recognize the inclusions if you louped it?

@KatyElle:  Ditto your thoughts!  Hoping that nothing “fishy” happened.

I would be terrified. I know that is not much of a help, considering I haven’t taken in my ring yet because I am nervous about things like this. Coud it just be that you are eing paranoid (I probably would be!)

Do you have pictures of the ring before and after so we can compare??

If you have the papers for it, I would take it in to a different jeweler and ask for their opinion about whether it matches the specs on your certification papers.

My FI’s cousin also sent her engagement ring in, to be repaired after chipping, and it came back with a smaller diamond in the center stone.  When she approached them, they said it was a mistake and gave her a larger diamond than the original one to make up for it.  Who knows if it was really a “mistake” or not.  I would confront them about it and see what they say, and also take it in to another jeweler.

@believe 123: You should go to a 3rd party appraiser who can look over the ring for you. They can usually tell right away if there are discrepancies. If there are, you can threaten legal action.

@believe 123:  Definitely trust your gut and take it to another reputable dealer to compare your stone to the papers.   Please keep us posted about what happens.  Good Luck!

Take it back and ask.  This happened to my sister’s ring.  It just so happened that another woman sent in hers the same day.  They were both the same size, princess cut, solitaires, white gold.  My sister only noticed bc the prongs on the setting were different.  It took quite a bit of complaining and bringingi n photos of the original ring for them to finally fix it! Luckily the other woman, who had not noticed hers was different, returned to trade them and we got a gift card to the jewelry store for our trouble.

I would def go tomorrow and get it checked! not sure if your diamond has it or not… But mine has a serial number lasered in the side of it… you can only see it under scope…

Hopefully nothing fishy is up….. but trust your gut! Keep us updated!

Has there been an update on this?  I’m curious to know what happened.
