kmmq72 :  I felt like I could take my time a lot more without my fiance present. When we went together, we sort of got swept up in the excitement of “oh my gosh we’re trying on ENGAGEMENT RINGS!!” and I didn’t really allow myself to think very critically beyond “oooh sparkly” or getting a sense of how much things were gonna cost. When I went by myself, I paid a lot more attention to how things looked and felt on my hand and took lots more photos to look at later when I could think about it more. So I thought it was really worthwhile and I’m so glad I did it.

It’s absolutely okay, and a fairly common thing to do!  If you’re worried about not being helped by the staff, just tell them you will be getting engaged soon and you want to look at/try on some rings so you can tell your BF your preferences.  If you can give them some specifics (ie, approx budget, maybe some general ideas like oval vs. princess or halo vs. three stone) they’ll probably be more helpful than if you just want to randomly point at stuff to try on.

There’s also some apps for iOS where you take a photo of your hand and can virtually try on rings – I think BlueNile has one, and there’s one for beaumade.  Probably a few others.

I don’t think it’s weird. Happy ring shopping! SO and I currently started looking for rings as well! It’s very exciting but stressful trying to pick out the perfect one.

I actually think this should become more commonplace.

I looked at rings when I was out with my mum one day. DH knows I’m extremely picky and I honestly wanted to just spare him the torture lol. It really helped me narrow down what I liked and what actually looked good on my finger.

He proposed with a stand in and then I went and designed my engagement ring by myself. I knew exactly what I wanted because I’d gone shopping with my mother! ๐Ÿ‘Œ

It’s not weird at all, go for it! ๐Ÿ™‚

I actually find going alone is weird, personally at least. My friend went alone and she liked it but I actually feel uncomfortable. Haha! I went with my friend once and the salesperson didn’t actually pay attention to me and barely even helped.

But when I went with my SO a week after that, that very salesperson was soo helpful.

So like PP said – they may actually not serve you as well cos they know you’re not going to be buying it if you’re alone.

I can see why it would be a little awkward at first to go by yourself but really wish I had done that.. Don’t get me wrong, I love my ring and all but think my choice would have been different had more research and looking been done. Go and have fun looking by yourself, he may thank you for it and you can take your time not feeling rushed!

I went by myself several times and the sales people were always very attentive and helpful. I never felt judged or like I was inconveniencing them. I actually felt like a jerk a little because I always knew we wouldn’t be buying from those stores, but they didn’t need to know that!

kmmq72 :  After we had our timeline talk, I went and got my finger sized so that I could tell him and to try on certain shapes to make sure I knew what I wanted. After that, I just told him my size and sent him pictures of what I liked. There was no need for us to go together and we never did. He still got it just right. Not that it would have mattered – when he proposed, I didn’t even see the ring before I said yes! I was too busy OMG-ing about him asking me to be his wife ๐Ÿ™‚

i don’t think it’s weird at all! I went myself a couple of times and up until a day ago when I got some reassurance I was scared my partner was never going to propose to me, so you’re in a much better position that I am! I found that the shop assistants were still really accommodating and helpful despite not having a partner with me. Go for it!

I went alone quite a few times and I found the sales assistants very helpful. It really narrowed down what I liked . By the time I went in with my boyfriend, we were very easy and relaxed while we picked out “the one” – I’d spared him all the overanalysis I’d done on my own ๐Ÿ˜Š Obviously we were choosing it together but I’d still think it would be useful if you’re just looking for ideas and he’s going to surprise you.
