My Fiance and I have been engaged for nearly a year and after saying yes, we resized my ring from a 4.75 to a 4.25. It always fit perfectly, unless it was crazy hot outside and I had been out for a long time. Then it was a little snug when taking it off, but not too difficult. All of a sudden, about 2 weeks ago, I noticed it was pretty snug. It’s especially difficult to get over my knuckle and it’s driving me crazy!!
I haven’t injured myself, it’s not “that time”, I’ve been drinking water like crazy, I don’t take in a lot of sodium, no weight gain (in fact, a few pounds lost)… I don’t know what’s going on. It’s not like my left hand is crazy swelled up… it’s just a bit larger than normal. Icing helps, but so far, it’s only been a temporary fix.
Has anyone else had this problem or have any advice? I don’t want to go to a doctor, as I am not having any other troubles and this seems so silly, but it’s really bothering me and I don’t want to re-size my ring, in case they (hopefully) go back to their normal size.

Is it unusually humid where you live? That’s when my fingers get HUGE!

Not too humid yet. Iowa summers are usually super humid and I didn’t have many problems with my ring fitting last summer. That’s why it’s so weird to me that I’m having troubles now.

My finger size is 4.25 but my actual ring is 4.5. It’s a very unique ring and cannot be made any smaller so I just went with it. It flops around quite a bit but will not come off over my knuckle.
Friday night I accidentally ate something I was pretty allergic to (and got really, really sick.) My hands got swollen and my fingers puffy which was pretty horrible. It’s taken the whole weekend and very potent allergy meds for them to calm down and for my ring to be flopping again. I don’t suppose you are prone to allergies?

No allergies that I’m aware of. And if it was that, I would think they would have gone back down by now, right?

@redhead_bride82413: Unless its a mild intolerance or allergy that you’re not aware of and its in your food that you’re eating regularly so everytime it decreases it comes back?

Do you think it has something to do with all this tree pollen around?
My mom doesn’t have allergies but this year she suddenly does, and it’s bad.
Maybe you’re just having a bit of an inflamatory response to all the crazy amounts of pollen floating around?
Hmm… taking/eating tumeric or ginger is supposed to help reduce swelling, I’ve heard.

Hmmm… I haven’t really changed my diet in the last couple weeks. I pretty religiously eat roughly the same things every day, so I’m not sure what would have changed recently?

I had the same issues! Mine is a 4.0 a few months ago it fit perfectly fine, than it went to the jewelers for 4-5 and now it’s a little snug. It loosens throughout the day but I think that’s because I drink so much water than at night I get dehydrated. Who knows!

I don’t hear of a DVT (deep vein thrombosis, essentially a blood clot) often affecting the hands, usually the legs and feet swell, but have you had any leg or feet swelling in addition to your hand or any unexplainable soreness in your calf? Are you on the BCP and do you smoke? Are you experiencing shortness of breath? If so, I’d recommend heading to the doctor to rule out DVT just in case, they can do a quick and painless doppler screen to make sure.

@littlemiss511: Glad I’m not the only one who’s had this issue! So you had it fitted to be a 4.5 now and it’s just correctly sized, or has it gotten progressively more snug since re-sizing?
My left hand fingers have always been a touch smaller than my right hand (I am right handed).I think they’re just about evenly sized now. Maybe it’s just a growth spurt? Haha
@jennmariee: I don’t think I have any leg or foot swelling. Everything seems pretty normal there. No unexplained calf soreness, am on the pill but not a smoker, no shortness of breath. Thanks for the suggestion though!

No advice, i actually just found out how the fingers could swell in the heat and shrink when cold last week when it happened to me!

Any chance you’re allergic to the nickel? White gold is sometimes combined with a nickel alloy. Once the rhodium plating is worn off after 3 months – 3 years (depending on your body chemistry), the nickel is exposed.
My advice? Get it re-dipped in the rhodium. See if that helps!

@drA: Wow! That is something I really would have never thought of! I just checked the ring and it’s white gold and it doesn’t look like it has worn off at all yet. It looks pretty much the same as the day I got it.
