not sure- my ring wasn’t custom made but I hope you can get it done else where.

I would ask him directly what the extra $1500 is for, ask for the estimate in writing, and take it to another jeweler.  Try finding someone who is specifically a goldsmith, and let the first one know you’re getting a 2nd opinion.  You’re right, you own the wax if you’ve already paid a deposit.

I can tell you that right now, gold is at about $1400 per ounce, so it very well may be for the gold.

@Megan316: This is true, but unless she’s wearing a 24k gold ring it shouldn’t affect the price that much.

Thats a HUGE underestimation on his part though.  I think he is partially responsible if you had to not go through with the ring. MIght you be able to just pay him for the wax?

I’m not sure what the protocol would be, but I can’t see you having to eat that difference since it there is such a huge discrepancy between what he quoted you and the actual price.

I dunno if it’s your style or anything you’d be interested in, but I posted a ring that my brother is trying to sell that he had custom made.  He paid $1850 for it, and is trying to get whatever he can for it (he’d be estactic with $600 at this point…).  It’s really gorgeous, but definitely a unique style that’s not for everyone…

even though gold is about that same price an ounce, thats an entire ounce of gold extra! i would tell him that you wont be able to pay that much and he can make the ring lighter. true, he did spend a lot of time on it, but you also told him what you wanted and he knew how much the diamonds weighed.

dont pay it!! make him fix it!!

think of it this way, what if he decided to add an extra ounce to your ring because he wanted help with rent for next month. not okay.

I am sorry they are pulling this crap with you, I never thought the ring search would be so stressful, it sounded alot more fun at first, stand your ground and make him fix his screw up I am sure the ring you end up with will be perfect 🙂
