lightchaser:  I made my own. I didn’t want to risk ordering and then not fully covering my windows. I’m attaching one of the instructables that I found on it. We also carry hammock tents that have mosquito netting. You can usually find them on Woot or a similar site for $30. Then hammock straps are like 20 on amazon or wherever. If it’s too hot we can toss those up and sleep off the ground. Plus they take up way less room than a traditional tent in the car. 2 hammock tents plus straps fit in a Walmart bag.

I’ve never rented a car for a road trip.  I always take mine to sometimes I have borrowed one of my parents that gets even better gas mileage.  We don’t lease them so no reason to worry about adding miles to my car especially since I usually am a low-mileage driver anyway.  I own it I might as well use it and not waste extra money renting.  Even when traveling with friends in the past we have never rented a car.

If you do decide to rent, make sure you read your contract VERY carefully. Most places add extra fees if you exceed a certain amount of miles.

lightchaser:  I drive my own, because our vehicle is perfect for this sort of thing (Honda Element FTW!).  But in your case I’d price out renting and see if you can make it work.

lightchaser:  We usually take either my SUV (4-Runner) or DH’s Truck (Tundra-double cab & pretty roomy- same gas mileage so thats not an issue). They both have 4WD and my SUV has all-wheel as well- pretty important to me as I LOVE taking forest service roads sometimes. We also have never had any issues with either vehicle, and care for them pretty well (we are in love with them both LOL). And we already drive through one-lane mt. roads on the regular so we know they can handle it without a problem. We also love that we can sleep in the back of my SUV if we are camping & it rains- had to do it once & we were the only ones that stayed dry! I’ve been wanting to get a truck bed tent for the Tundra, but am making myself wait until the vehicle is paid off. And we have a 60lb dog that comes pretty much everywhere with us & she needs some room too.

If our vehicles were less reliable or had issues I would probably rent, but we finally have two awesome capable & reliable vehicles so we just enjoy using them!

We always use our own vehicle.  My husband’s truck if we are pulling a trailer or something, mine if we aren’t.  We bought them to use and they are nice and comfy!

lightchaser:  We have an older car, so we usually rent. It’s pretty cheap and we feel like it’s worth it to avoid the wear and tear on our vehicle. Plus we usually rent a car with more leg room than ours 😀
