Yikes! Luckily that’s never happened to me. I’m sorry you’re dealing with this, but it sounds like they didn’t take too much which is good.

I don’t have much advice, but I wanted to tell you how sorry I am this happened to you.  It does sound like it might be a kid, since they didn’t take as much as they could have (which in the end is a good thing). I can’t imagine the feeling though 🙁

I’m sorry your are feeling scared to be in your own home.  Would a security system give you piece of mind?

No I don’t know unfortunately.  We have considered getting one but haven’t researched much.  I think you can actually buy stickers to put on the windows without even having a system though.

You could get an old fashioned magnet system that just makes noise when the magnets aren’t touching anymore which would happen if someone opened a door or window.  I don’t think those are as expensive as a monitored system.

I’m sorry this happened to you! It (to me) either sounds like kids did it, or someone who needed a drug fix and needed fast cash. You could also get security cameras, they arent that $$ and easy to install. We have them installed in our house b/c a few houses around us were robbed. They are hooked up to a computer moniter in our bedroom so when in on the 3rd floor i can see whats goin on.

I’m so sorry that happened to you.  I guess the silver lining is that you weren’t home at the time and they didn’t take too much.  Still un-nerving to deal with though.

I’m so sorry this happened!  I was robbed about 3 years ago, while still single and living alone, and completely understand not feeling safe.  They tore my flat screen tv right off the wall (but apparently did it in such a way that it pulled the plug out and I was told it was probably unusable) but left my wallet that was sitting right on the table, along with all my other valuables.  My cats were completely unphased.  The saving grace, the police think, was that my security system went off.  It wasn’t connected to the alarm company at the time (it definitely is now!), but the burglars couldn’t have known it, so they grabbed what they could and ran.  I think burglars are easily spooked so perhaps the sound of your cat or something in your front yard kept them from taking anything more.  Security systems can be expensive to install ($200+) but the monthly fee is usually somewhere between $30 and $50.  I couldn’t live without one now.

My old roommate and I left the house for 20mins.. To run across the street to put some laundry in at the laundry mat. When we came back we unlocked our front door and our place was destroyed!! Money and jewelry was the only things missing. I had a water plant with a beta fish in it that was knocked over on the carpet. Luckily I had clean water sitting out getting to room temp so I could clean the vase. He survived. We found out they climbed up the balcony and came in my roommates bedroom window and hid the screen under her bed. They ripped open the back door and left. The frame was on the ground. Our whole apartment was trashed.. We were gona for 20 MINUTES!!!! We were so pissed. Cops didn’t really care. We think it was the Somalian neighbors since we lived in a shady part of town. They had to have been watching for us to leave. Don’t dress nice with nice things and drive nice cars if you love in a shady area! Ha we moved 2 months later.. 🙂

We have a security system of 2 cameras with motion sensor lights that come on and 1 UV camera that can see in the dark. It cost money to get installed, but we just have it hooked up to a tv inside, so you can literally see all sides of the house if you flip to the AV channel. The good thing about that is lots of cameras looks like a security company, but since they’re just hooked up to your house, and not a security company, there is no monthly fee.

My mom’s friend got robbed just before Christmas this passed year. They took all her jewelry including her 5 carat center stone 8 carat total weight engagement ring, and all the Christmas gifts for 7 kids…They even took the drawers from her dresser…

She installed a security system. I’m not sure of cost but I remember her saying it wasn’t too expensive.

We are looking into installing security camera’s. My work (a small family owned shop) got a set with 4 camera’s that records and hooks up to a video monitor for super cheap on onesaleaday.com. Its on 24/7 and we’ve used it a number of times now. It was super easy to install and super easy to work.

OMG I feel so bad for you!!! I’m sorry this happened to you! Thank goodness that’s all they took and no one was home when it happened!!

A few months ago there was a bunch of houses that got robbed on our block. It scared the crap out of me! One happened while there was 3 kids home (16,13 and 10) and the robbers just pretened to have a gun and stole things while the kids watched!

I’d even look into ‘fake’ security cameras. They are cheap and look real. And robbers arent going to risk it if they think they will get caught!

I think that’s one of the worst feelings ever.  Maybe they got scared off when they got inside the house or figured they would have had too much difficulty getting the bigger items back out of the house?  Maybe he was just looking for jewelry?

Either way, you might want to get a security system.  Not sure which area of NY you’re in, but I’m in Queens, NY and extra security is always a good thing.
