My fiance wants to have a band play at our wedding. I’m not talking about a stuffy, hoity toity band. I’m talking about PopRocks (a cover band) that you can rock to. However, never having been to a wedding with a band, I’m not sure how that works. Do they start playing at the beginning of the reception, or do they play a set after the dinner/speech/toast/cake cutting etc? Do I have to arrange for music to be played during dinner before the band starts? This is all new to me. Anyone with similar experience…please help!

Hey there. My brother’s wedding we had both the DJ and band. The reason is the band we hired was my brother’s old band and he wanted them to have some time to enjoy dinner and dance with their girls before getting up there to play. Also, the DJ was then in charge of making the announcements. My brother made a list of songs for the band to play. They played the first dance and then about 5 songs. Then took a break and the DJ played music while we ate. Then the band got back up there for another set. You can do whatever you feel like. Some bands can’t play certain songs so if there is anything special you want played you’ll need to have a DJ or something else figured out. Hope that helps

You can always use an ipod when the band is not playing.
We have a strings group playing for the ceremony, ipod for the cocktail hour, acoustic guitar during dinner, and the band begins after dinner. We thought about using the ipod for both the cocktail hour and dinner, but for personal reasons, decided against it. I doubt our guests would have noticed or cared if it was ipod. Through the band, we paid a fee to have the ipod set up to run through their speakers and other stuff.
It’s really up to you, what you negotiate with the band, what you want, and what you’re willing to pay.
