I generally prefer the modern Round Brilliant, unless the setting is also antique so the entire piece is vintage. I think OECs are trendy right now because for the longest time most people re-cut older stones into modern RBs. Then people almost rediscovered the older cuts and realized that for many of the stones that were originally cut that way, it was the best thing for them, visually, and a lot of them didn’t look so great recut into RBs. Many older OEC stones (though certainly not all) were lower coloured, and the OEC plays well with both lower colours and lower lighting (candle light, low incandescent).

But IMO they are definitely trendy right now. They can be beautiful on the right stone, but for a higher coloured (mostly colourless or nearly colourless) stone I definitely prefer the Round Brilliant.
