Round brilliant is the most popular cut and this tends to be consistent over time. Maybe because it is the most scintillating.

When selecting how to cut a stone, a round is considered as the first option. If that will not maximize monetary return, other cuts are considered. There are fewer stones of other cuts but they don’t tend to cost as much because they are less popular (law of supply and demand, in this case demand is pulling more weight).

For that reason, round brilliant is considered “the classic.”

I think RB is the “standard” because it’s designed for optimal sparkle, table size, and ease of use with a variety of settings. I don’t know of this translates to “classic”, in my eyes, but that’s why I assume it’s so heavily pushed. I prefer OEC or OMC if I’m going for a round cut, but I understand the popularity of the RB.
