Depends on how formal your reception is.  You could do paper placemats if its casual or charger plates if its formal.  I also prefer silverware and napkins on the table rather then the buffet.  I HATE trying to balance a plate of food, napkin, and silverware as I go back to my seat.  You could do a pretty napkin fold, or wrap the silver in a napkin and tie it with a ribbon. Are you doing any favors?  Those could also be put out at each place setting.

I agree with nikkialys. A cute place mat or doily would be cute! You could even write the guests name on the doily as a placecard!

I’m having this problem too, but with long rectangular tables. Placemats, napkins w/ utensils and favors sound good. Where can I get nice paper placemats online?

Yeah you could just place the silverware on the table and the plates at the buffet table:)

Doing something with the napkins would be easy and practical, they need them anyway! also there is no reason you cant have the silver ware already at the place setting. Remember what its like to carry your plate and silverware at a buffet – yes not that hard, but it can be frustrating! I like the look of these two tables the way the napkins are placed, not necessarily the colors but you could use your colors and use a range so there is more life

Couldn’t you have the silverware already set on the table and use a charger plate?  When we thought we were going to be having a buffet that was our plan.

I had the long rectangler tables and I just used the bell shaped place cards holders in front of each seat with a picture in them.  I also did several centerpieces to “hide” the open space.

This is what I did for my tables- 10″ paper doilies with a Thank You card on each place.
