Ahh I had a similar situation! I really liked the idea of having a little icon for each meal option, but I’m a huge animal lover and seeing the little chicken/cow/fish made me sad, haha. Unfortunately, I think the only unambiguous ways to identify meal choices are with a drawing of the animal or with words. I’d definitely vote for doing what makes you and your Fiance comfortable, though – it’s your wedding, and if neither of you minds the icons then go for it!

Maybe it is because I am a farm girl, but I think your Future Mother-In-Law is WAY over thinking this. People don’t put that much thought into it. No one is going to cry over the icon of a cow and rethink their decion to eat beef. If that was the case, everyone who read a children’s book with farm animals would be a vegetarian.

You could also just do coloured dots instead of icons. Red (beef), yellow (chicken) and green (veg).

I think you are fine with the animals, personally!
However, we did colors. I printed the place cards on different colored paper for each entree selection (eg, chicken was gold, salmon was silver, and vegetarian was white). Those were our wedding colors so it looked pretty too.

Thankyou for the replies everyone!
There are some great ideas in this thread, however I found little origami chicken/cow/shrimp/duck symbols which I thought might sit well and are super cute!
Also I’m doing symbols on the RSVPs because guests get a choice of starter and main, which is a lot of words to put on one tiny card!
After all this I do think I was a little pedantic about it all, but that’s wedding planning for you.
