OP: Sorry that you had to deal with that. I ran into the same problem before finding a shop that only catered to plus sized women. What I did to make the most of my appointments at other shops was to have my cousin try on the dresses that I couldn’t. We have similar shapes but I’m larger. Because we have similar shapes I was able to get an idea of what the dress might look like on me. I don’t know if you would feel comfortable with doing the same, but maybe it would help.

Agreed. I was referring to the BMI comment in general…I wasn’t implying anything to you or even referring to your comment. 🙂
That is a great idea. My Maid/Matron of Honor when she got married last March was in love with a dress from DB that only was available in a 10 in the store. I squeezed myself into it to give her an idea because she couldn’t fit into it. While it isn’t the same as being the one to try it on it goes give one a bit of insight. Great suggestion!

Thanks again everyone.
I just wanted to say…I really didn’t mean to stir up any drama. Yeah, I’m a size 22…Yes I could afford to lose a whole TON of weight, yes my BMI numbers indicate that I can live a healthier lifestyle which, believe me I will try to! This dress crapola has been a bit of a kick in the pants to get going so I can look hot for my September 14 wedding! Sapphire, I know you weren’t trying to be cruel, I really truely believe you had good intentions. I was very emotional after my experience, and I’m sure other Bees were touched on some level by my story as well, hence the heated responses.
I haven’t been overweight all my life. I went through something tramatic in 2003, something that affected me on a very deep level, losing someone close to me. Since then I’ve slowly been putting on the weight. I’m not making excuses…but it’s like that Amanda Marshall song Everybody’s Got A Story…we all have stories, and unfortunately it is human nature to be judgemental.
Anyhow…I just wanted to say that after reading all of your encouraging words and suggestions I went to bed last night, and while I didn’t sleep very much I’m feeling much better about everything today. I’m not sure how ready I am to get out there looking for a dress again, but I will 🙂 My life long friends have been so supportive, and will help me find a dress that makes me feel amazing no matter what. Hopefully I’ll lose some weight before my wedding….and if I do I hope the effin dress can be taken in. LOL
Oh yes, i’m in Oshawa Ontario, Canada for some of you who asked. I know Ms. Martian had some suggestions I”ll definately follow up with. And when I find a dress I’ll definately let everyone know 🙂
Thanks again everyone….and I really do mean everyone, for all your feed back. Nobody was awful to me, I know you’re all trying to help and I really truely appreciate it. 🙂

Whoa…. Some serious thread jacking…..
Sorry about that OP usually posts do not dissolve into a tangent as this one has…
So sorry about your experience, I promise you by are not all like that. I can relate, when I went. The first dress the consultant pulled was a size 6 mermaid. I am I size 14 …. Yea that went over well.some of them have no sence. Besides, I am 100000000000 percent positive that you are a very attractive woman. 😉

I just wanted to chime in for some sympathy. My first bridal shop experience sucked a lot. The salespeople weren’t mean at all, but not all that helpful. I’m a few sizes bigger than you and the girl who helped me was petite in all ways. She didnt exactly know how to handle me, haha. And she wasn’t prepared even though I told them I was plus-sized and specifically asked if they would have dresses in my size, and they said yes. But when i drove over an hour to get there, they had nothing and wanted me to do the whole “hold this in front of you and imagine yourself in the dress.” When she said this i looked at mom my mom and sisters in horror, and their faces mirrored my own. I was not dropping $1k on a dress that I was only going to “imagine” myself in.
Luckily my boss told me about this awesome shop that was purely plus-sized and when i went there, every dress I was interested in I could try on. They might not have fit, but they fit enough for me to actually put in on and it was the best feeling ever. I really felt like a real bride, and that’s how every girl should feel when trying on dresses, whether they are size 2 or 32.

Really happy to hear you’re feeling better today. Sorry if I contributed to the thread getting carried away. Good luck with your dress hunt when you do go looking again. Make sure you share what you do find! 🙂
