My mindset has always been a bonus is a bonus, not to be expected. I’ve worked here 7+ years & always get a ($200-400) bonus the payday before Christmas (its a small company & they always say they wish they could do more). Yesterday, the boss comes in with 2 blank checks (my paychecks are always filled out next to me & there’s no reason for them to bring checks here except to pay me). I get my normal paycheck & then the boss starts working. Before the boss leaves I ask if they’re doing a Christmas bonus (they are forgetful & I have to remind them about things all the time). They say that things are slower than last year, so probably not but “wishes” they could. Why did they bring in TWO checks then?
The same time they’re telling me things might be too slow for a bonus, they paid a lot of money for a customer, when “its too slow” for a bonus for me. I’ve done so much for them.
I feel that its wrong of me to take it personally, because a bonus shouldn’t be expected. But I’m hurt & kind of want to start looking for a new job because of this… (ETA not the ONLY reason, just the “last straw”).
ETA 2: I edited part of my post because I’m paranoid & would hate my employer to somehow hear about this & connect it to me. I would hate to make them feel bad about something they’ve always done to be nice & generous.

@ohowiloveyou: It’s not something to look for a new job over. My old employer did this. It was a multi million dollar company and he had 3 Lexus. He gave me 10 bucks. I felt a little hurt but I just laughed and said he must need it more then I do.

I don’t get a bonus, just a handshake from the CEO, which I guess is neat, too. 🙁

Bonus’s have always been a suprise at my place of work until last year. The first year I got $1000 which was totally unexpected, and the next year just a coat with our logo. One year was $25 at a gas station, one year was nothing because ‘times were tough’. Finally we’ve settled into $100 for every year we’ve been here. Its soo nice to be able to plan on something concrete vs. having it be a suprise.
I know how you feel though, it was very upsetting to get nothing for a bonus especially when I see how wastefull my boss can be sometimes. At the same time be grateful you’ve ever gotten one because a lot of people don’t get one at all… or don’t even have a job to get one from right now.

I had incentive to get a bonus at my last job. It was completely subjective and if the supervisor deemed you unworthy she kept the bonus :D. Seemed all my co-workers and myself were unworthy.
I figured saving the company money was my job, working hard was my job and when they created a new position at more money I applied and got it, because of my hard work. I’d rather have the raise than any freaking bonus … well considering I don’t work on Wall St. those are some bonus’ I wouldn’t mind having 😀

I know I shouldn’t be hurt over it, I don’t know why I’m so sad about it. But it just feels like I’m not worth it. Part of it is I feel lied to. Part of it is that it wasn’t expected to not get one. I’ve gotten one every year for 7 years. I’ve always been very thankful & never expected it. This is the one year I was counting on it, that was my money for Christmas gifts (we’ve been very tight financially) & now I can’t really afford to get my family anything. Not even my mom :(. I don’t want to be greedy… I mean, they didn’t even thank me for my good work this year. Usually every year they say how much they appreciate me & my hard work & that they couldn’t do it without me.

I never get a christmas or year-end bonus from my company – nor does any other employee. But I wouldn’t quit over it.

I used to get several thousand dollars at Christmas and then business went south. This year is the first bonus in 4 years, we each get $100 cash. It was hard to come up with that (I’m the accountant, I really wanted to tell the boss we can’t afford the bonuses but he couldn’t stand not to give something.)
A customer who may do more business with you is worth a rush shipping job. I’m sorry you didn’t get a bonus but it’s quite possible the boss is doing everything he can just to stay afloat.

Ok well I wouldn’t quit JUST over this. Its like the “last straw”…. makes me want to look for a new job after everything else. I think the main reason I feel lied to is I know the numbers, I am asked to run the financial reports so yes we’re not as good as we were last year, but they make quite a bit of money.

Our company is sizeable (with an international presence) and we don’t get holiday bonuses or anything special. Further, our bonuses are performance-based so it’s not even like it’s a guaranteed thing you can bank on. Truthfully, I think the company could afford to gift something (e.g. $200 gift card) per person if they really wanted to. However, they don’t.
I understand that you, and anyone else that receives regular bonuses, feel slighted and hurt, but it is a BONUS, meaning something extra on top of your salary. In that regard, no one is entitled to one. People are only entitled to their earnings.
I know you go above and beyond, such as coming in sick and working on your days off but that’s your prerogative. You could set boundaries with your employer and you would be within your right to say that you are on-call during the times you are paid. Period.

@ohowiloveyou: If this is the “last straw”, I think you need to make that clearer because a lot of people here won’t have too much sympathy for you, as many don’t receive bonuses at all, or also work for companies that have done away with them due to the economy. Personally, I would be hurt but get over it.. although if this is one of many slights towards you and you are unhappy going to work every day, it’s definitely time to start looking for something new.

@figgnewton: $10? Well, if he had a lot of employees, I could maybe see it would be too much to pay everyone a lot, but really just $10? that would be kinda awkward lol
@littlemisst08: I don’t think I’ve ever shaken my boss’ hand lol that’s an interesting bonus.
@Josina: The first year I got one, I was stunned & not expecting it & felt guilty getting it! I understand where you’re coming from thou.
@HisIrishPrincess: Good for you getting the new job :). I’d rather have a raise because over time that adds up to more than a bonus would (well except for maybe wall street 😉
Now I just feel greedy 😛

I’d be mad if I didn’t get a bonus but it’s part of life. I wouldn’t quit my job over it or anything. I get a hefty christmas bonus and annual raise so I am very appreciative of both because I know many people don’t get either of those things these days.

Honestly I can’t feel sorry for you AT ALL. I work for a very large company. We get NOTHING for Christmas, I have worked here for 7 years and never ever have gotten a thing from them.

My company used to give bonuses but after the economic recession it couldn’t afford to do so anymore. Now we each just get a signed Christmas card. It sucks not getting a bonus when you’re used to getting one, but I wouldn’t be personally offended by it. If times are tough and they don’t have the money, they simply don’t have the money.
As for them spending $100 to ship something to a customer, well, it’s their job to make the customer happy and that’s probably more important to them in the long-run than employee bonuses, which is understandable.
