My SO and I found out last night that our ex-SIL and mother of his 7 year old niece, overdosed and will not recover from it as she was not found till 6 hours after it happened. She has been suffering from drug problems since before her little girl was born and has bounced back and forth out of her life for the past 7 years (from a few months to a few weeks or days at a time). No little girl should ever have to go through what she has since she was born and should never have to lose her mother to something so preventable and while we all knew this day would probably come it does not make it ok nor any easier. My SO lost his dad 5 years ago and that was especially hard on his brother, father to the little girl, as he was very close to his dad and he had to take over the role of supporting the family after he passed and now to lose the mother of his daughter too. So very very tragic. Just asking for everyones prayers for our niece.

Very sad 🙁 Sorry to hear that.

That is horrible. Are you close enough to be a mentor in this little girl’s life?

That is so sad, my prayers are with her and the rest of your family. I second burris4, if you’re close enough to be active in her life, a good aunt can never replace a mother but she can be a source of strength, unconditional love (stepmoms may come but an aunt is guaranteed for life…not a knock on stepmoms, but there are some women who don’t take the role as seriously as a lot of wonderful women on this board seem to), and a role model.

Yes we are very close to her, I have known her since she was 6 months old. She currently lives with her dad and her other aunt, my SIL is 17 years older than my SO and his Brother. She also lives with her two cousins (who are in their early 20’s), all under one roof, they live just around the corner from us. We hope to remain an active part of her life to hopefully help steer her in the right directions in life.
