@Kari 2012:  This is a hard decision and women have more choice about it now than they ever did. I just got married on 7/20 and went to the SS office today. I’ve had my ex’s last name for nearly 29 years and I’m so ready to change it. After my divorce I kept it so my kids wouldn’t feel bad. Now, over 3 years later, I would have gone back to my maiden name if I hadn’t remarried. Remember that you will always be that person (with your original name). Nothing takes that away. I’m very proud of my maiden name but I chose to just take my new husband’s name – I joined my life with his and this is one way I show it. But I will always be who I was born as…

I never considered NOT changing my name, but when I did it last week I was surprised by how hard it was for me.  I kept thinking about how I’m not a <maiden name> anymore and it made me feel left out of my family.  It’s weird to me that I have the same name as my ILs now!  But, I’m trying to keep telling myself that it means that Darling Husband and I are a family now.

Yes, I realized what I really felt but hadn’t been able to put into words when Darling Husband came home last night and told me he’d signed me up for his insurance and told me he felt really good about being able to put me down as his last name. I told him I had some hesitation about the name thing but decided I’m all in with him so that includes the same name (like we’re on the same team lol). And that’s when I realized that’s exactly how I feel 🙂
