Ouch!! Yes… SF is going to be pricey!! I would recommend Priceline/Hotwire etc. You’re probably gonna have to up it to around $150 since room rates are pretty much going for $200-$250 normally.

There are some around here: Hilton/Hyatt/Doubletree by Hilton

Are you going to be renting a car? If you are; you can stay near SFO in SSF or Millbrae and drive into SF everyday (its a 15 minute drive)

Feel free to PM me if you need more details or help!

We went to San Fran on our honeymoon (we are also from Australia) and yes the sticker shock and what you get for that price leave a lot to be desired.

We stayed at the Good hotel. It is very central to everything and the area was ok (be prepared San Fran has a large homeless population and some very visable drug trade). It runs around $200 a night but is clean. It is in the SOMA but that isn;t that far from Union Sq.

One thing I found when checking out San Fran hotels was a lot of the lower priced ones had bed bug problems. There is a website called the bed bug registry that you cna look up your hotel on and of course trip advisor!
