I wanted to see if anyone has had OR been to a small wedding on the outskirts of the Santa Barbara courthouse?????? My fiance and I have been talking about have a very small ceremony with our parents, siblings and grandmothers before we through a “party”. We are not have a party/wedding until May 2014….but both of our grandmothers are in their 90s and their health isn’t the best. They both are very excited for us to begin a life together and we want to make sure that they are a part of it…
So I guess I have 2 questions…how are the free ceremonies for small weddings at Santa Barbara courthouse? AND should we have a party next May still and act like a wedding???? I’m so torn, I want them to be around, but I don’t know if their health will last another year.
I’d love to hear people’s thoughts! 🙂

A client of mine had her wedding at the Mural Room at the Santa Barbara courthouse, she was so happy she did it and it was a drop dead gorgeous event! I think it’s wonderful that you want to include your grandmothers in your wedding. I would consider doing the ceremony now, and just do a vow renewal in May of 2014 like you are planning. Or why not just do everything now?
Here’s a photographer’s blog and a wedding he shot at The Mural Room

Although that is a gorgeous room, we want to have the ceremony outside and it’s going to be very small (14 people including us and the photog). I love your idea about a vow renewal…then everyone can see it too. We want to wait until next May primarily due to his family being from Lousiana – and we want them to be able to make it out to California. Plus we want to be outside so hopefully that means no rain! hehe 🙂 Who knows what the weather will look like next year though! Thank you for your advice! It is much appreciated!

Not sure if you’re still looking for info, but here’s the site regarding the different areas around the courthouse for weddings: http://countyofsb.org/parks/parks01.aspx?id=14888
If you’re doing it on a weekday the free/small areas should be fine. But on the weekends there are a lot of people walking around. One day my fiance almost walked in between the photographer and couple since it was so tiny we hardly noticed them!
Also, very close by is Alice Keck Park Memorial Gardens. I’ve seen weddings there too. It’s perfect for something tiny, and there is great scenery around.
May could very well be sunny or very foggy. Very doubtful for rain though.
