Another vote for Santorini.  Stay in Oia.  It’s the most romantic island in the world! I miss it so much.

But honestly, both are doable.  They are a short ferry ride away from eachother.

Ist it possible to look into a cruise? We did 4 days in Athens (I’m a huge history nerd, so I loved every second of it), and then two weeks traveling from island to island, and also had to opportunity to visit some parts of Turkey. I really recommend it, it was the most amazing trip of my life!

@Mrs. Cooper:  I would do 2 nights.  I don’t think one is enough.  We actually flew in to Athens for two nights, ferried to Santorini, then came back for another night in Athens and flew out from the same airport.  I’m not positive, but I think it’s a lot cheaper that way.

Honestly, the ferry prices are not bad at all (well at least when I was there back in 06, but sure things have changed with their economy.) Plus Mykonos & Santorini are SO close!

We did 3 nights in Mykonos and 2 in Santorini – it really depends the vibe you want, Mykonos is very much a “party island”  and Santorini is more of a romantic/ calmer vibe.

@Mrs. Cooper:  We stayed only in Santorini in the Oia section of the island.  It’s for sure the most gorgeous.  We actually WON the trip so we stayed in a private villa, so I can’t attest to any hotel recommendations.  But I can’t imagine there’s a bad option.  You really will have an amazing time.  I know I’ll never be anywhere more beautiful.

Oh and in Athens we stayed at Hotel Attalos.  It wasn’t the most beautiful hotel but it was cheap and in an AMAZING location – only a block away from the center of the city.

@Mrs. Cooper:  Another vote for Santorini!  We stayed in Oia at Ikies and I highly recommend it if it’s in your budget (just a note – April 1-May 31 and Oct 1-Oct 31 is their “low” season, so the rates are lower).  Oia is such a beautiful town.  We spent a lot of time on our balcony in our hot tub, and it was amazing!!

We stayed two nights in Mykonos and three nights in Santorini.  We didn’t spend any time in Athens, but it’s just not something that interested us as much and we had limited time.

Definitely Santorini. Myknonos is a HUGE party island, especially for homosexuals, which I’m totally cool with, but is not really the vibe I want for a romantic getaway to the islands. I want a bit more peace and quiet. There is nightlife in Santorini, but it’s nothing like Mykonos. Plus, on Santonini, there are red and black sand beaches and you can take a boat to Nea Kameni and swim in the springs and climb up to the volcanic vents. It’s really cool. And there are more antiquities too. There’s a cycladic museum, in Fira, I think, and the town of ancient Thera. I think Akrotiri is still closed.

I vote for Santorini, I’ve been 3 times and we’re going for our honeymoon this September! I recommend staying in Imerovigli. It’s a bit cheaper than Oia and in my personal oppinion more beautiful. Most of the hotels in Imerovigli are built right into the cliff side and there’s nothing more amazing than waking up in the middle of the cliffs with a view of the caladra from your balcony. ( I’m sure a lot of the hotels in Oia are the same, but I also think that Imerovigli is a better location. It’s quiet and only a 15 minute walk to Fira ( an absolute amazing 15 minute walk along a path with the most unreal views you will ever see in your life) And then you can also walk along a path out to Oia as far as I remember as well.

If you want to do 2 islands there’s a few options.

Mykonos is an expensive island, you would be better off going to Naxos.

Naxos rivals Santorini for my favorite Greek island. It’s pretty cheap ( accomodation and food wise ) and you can take a day trip to Mykonos if you really want to see that island. ( which is what we did with my mom and my sister two years ago, my mom wanted to see Mykonos so bad but it was just way to expensive for us )

Another suggestion is what we are doing for our honeymoon. We are flying straight to Santorini for 4 nights. THen we are flying from Santorini to Athens. The flight is only $150 each, very reasonable, and only takes 45 minutes so you’re not wasting travel on ferries. Then there’s a group of island very close to Athens called the Saronic Gulf Islands. They only take like 20mins-60 mins or so to get to by the fast ferries. The ferries are supposed to be pretty cheap and we’ve found great prices for our hotels. We are going to Spetses first for 2 nighs and then Aegina for 3 nights. We then head to Athens for 3 nights.

I don’t know why people say 1 night is enough, I don’t think it is. There’s tons to do in Athens, a lot of tours of the main attractions take a full day on their own. It’s also great to go out to Delphi for a day, or Cape Sounion ( which is an hour bus ride away ) The Plaka is wonderful to walk around in the evening for food and shopping. There’s lots of shopping in the two squares ( Omonia and Synagma )

When we went to Santorini two years ago we stayed at Irinis Villas, we really loved the view, they’re cheap. According to tripadvisor, they’re under new managment so they’re not as good now, but they’re affordable. This trip we will be staying with Vallais Villas ( which look UNREAL ) In Athens we will be staying at the Royal Olympic Hotel. I stayed there last time and it’s a beautiful hotel right across the street from Zeus’ Temple and super close to the Acropolis.

Feel free to ask any questions if you haven’t booked yet!
