To be honest of all the weddings I’ve been too and subsequent photos I would have to say that taffeta is the most shiny of all materials. That being said it is all about appropriate lighting and photography.

Here are two photos of my dress (satin) and you can clearly see that one shows up more “shiny” than the other however in person the dress isn’t shiny at all. Again, all about lighting (and a good photographer).

Here’s my silk satin gown, it came out beautifully in pro photos:

You may already be aware of this, but satin is not a material.  Rather, it is a finish, and the answer to your question about how “shiny” it will appear really depends on the type of fabric and the type of satin finish. One of the most beautiful and luxurious bridal fabrics available is 100 percent silk duchess satin.

@cherryblossomlove: Yes, this actually is also true of taffeta.  You can find gowns that have a taffeta finish that are 100-percent polyester and gowns that have a taffeta finish that are 100-percent silk.  For example, my gown was 100-percent silk taffeta. It was not shiny but had more of a matte finish.

 Oooh I think the shine is what makes it look so pretty!!

 @KatNYC2011:

Yours was Ulla Maija right? So beautiful!!! I also wore Ulla Maija and even though I had a bit of dress regret at first because it was such a “unique” dress, I wouldn’t have worn anything else!!  The dress ended up being my favorite part of the wedding!

OP, I say GO SATIN! 🙂

i’m getting married in fall (possibly winter now) so i originally wanted to go with satin because it’s heavier, but i wound up with taffeta. i never even thought about how shiny it might be in pictures…part of why i liked the dress was because it was shimmery under normal lights.  🙁  i wonder if it’ll look bad?

This is what mine looked like in full sun. I think it’s a nice kind of shiny. I think it would be odd to have a matte gown if it wasn’t lace or chiffon or something that’s actually supposed to be like that!
