@marinewife4:  It’s really a preference thing. Not everyone sends out save the dates, and that’s fine. You just need to be sure that you send out invites with more than enough time to make arrangements, especially because you are getting married over a holiday.

At least 2 months. I would also maybe send out an electronic save the date or something before hand, so they know what to expect. Some might already have plans for the holiday.

I would send out STD cards because the wedding will be on 4th of July weekend.  They don’t have to be anything fancy.  If it were me I would like to know ahead of time so I can make plans accordingly.

@marinewife4:  Etiquette Snob here… lol

Save The Dates are a relatively NEW thing for the Wedding World… they were dreamed up by the Stationers to replace what used to be a Newspaper Engagement Announcement.

STDs are tricky tho cause they actully say “SAVE the Date” on them, so they imply you will follow up with an Actual Invite.  To not do so then is considered RUDE

So one really needs to have their ducks in a row before sending any of them out… make sure you know

  • Your Wedding Date
  • Your Budget
  • Your Venue
  • Your FINAL Guest List
  • AND that Your Venue & Budget can accommodate your Guest List (who you send any STDs to )

STDs are useful for a Destination Wedding… or anytime when Guests might need more lead time to make plans (such as a Holiday Weekend)

The Rule is to send STDs out when you get Engaged, or up to a year in advance of the Wedding.

What you don’t want to do is send out an STD with little lead time to the Guests getting an actual Invite

I think they’d be a good idea for your July 4th Wedding… but you’ll want them in the mail by January.

The good news is, with it being Cyber Monday, you should be able to find them on-line ON SALE.

I know that VistaPrint – Wedding Paper Divas – Shutterfly etc. are all having GREAT SALES today.  Expect to get things at 50% off or better.

Hope this helps,

@marinewife4:  Yeah, I’d DEFINITELY do a STD if the wedding is on a big holiday weekend. They’ll need to book flights, hotel, cars, etc way ahead of time and even in-town guests will have to forego any other plans!
