I’ll answer the first question – yes! At least, that’s what we did. I think some of our closest family appreciated the invites the most, and will keep them as a reminder of the day. On the second question, that’s totally up to you. Our wedding was in Panama with almost 100 US-based people, so we sent the STD out very early so people could plan. I know others who have much less time between the invites and Save-The-Date Cards.

People usually expect STD’s around 6 months, unless you many out of town guests, more notice is better.  They should go to everyone you plan on sending an invitation to and one per couple.

1) We’re sending them to everyone on our gust list. And YES deff send save the dates AND invites to immediate family. They are the ones that will appreciate it the most I think! 😀

2) We’re sending ours out 6 months before so I think you have plenty of time.

@smiley90:I didn’t send a save-the-date to EVERYONE on our list. All family and super close friends, yes. But some people (like FIL’s friends or the like) didn’t get one.

I would go ahead and send them out as soon as you can. It’s never too early, but closing in on the mark to send out invites would make a save the date pointless.
