We were supposed to have our E-pics taken yesterday but got rained out, so we rescheduled for Dec 12. Of course, we have no idea what the weather will be like that day and we could very well be rained out again. If that happens, we will not be able to use E-pics for our save the dates. I’m dead-set on having picture for them, so my question is, has anyone done their own pics for save the dates? Future Father-In-Law has a nice DSLR camera and we could have him snap some pics of us, I’m just concerned they won’t look nice enough to send to 150 people.
As anyone done this? Pics to share?

It definitely can be done. Do you have a friend who can help to photograph? An idea also in case it rains again is to go with it. I’ve seen some epic sessions where they are in the rain (imagine snuggling under the umbrella, rainboots, cuddling in front of a fire) and they have a great look too. You can mix up outside shots and inside shots so you do not have a cancel again.

Thanks, neontl. We (FI) really want to take our pics out at the beach where we got engaged, so I just can’t see us doing that in the rain. Otherwise, I would definitely just roll with it instead of possibly canceling again.

My cousin just used pics she already had for her std’s (she had a short engagement, so she just had to get them out to guests asap) and it was fine. I actually thought it was cute because the layout was similar to a family photo album. For her e-pics she had them on display at the wedding and in their slideshow so all the guests could still see the pro pics.

yes we did this. we haven’t booked our photographer yet but wanted to get our save the dates out asap because we have a lot of people from out of the country coming. So FI’s brother in law took our pictures. He is a hobby photographer and has all sorts of equipment, (flashes and special lighting screens, etc). We spent about an hour and got about 80 shots. out of those 4 were STD worthy and a bunch more were just really cute.

we had a free engagement session with someone trying to start a photography business and build his portfolio. they were a hot mess. so, we brought our slr and fi’s brother out with us one day and took our own pictures. they came out perfectly!
ask a friend to tag along and operate the camera – it’s much easier than setting up a tripod. and thell that person to just keep clicking – you want PLENTY of pictures to choose from, because if you’re like me, you can’t afford/don’t even know how to use photoshop so your editing skills are pretty limited. fi’s brother took as many photos in about 30 minutes as our “photographer” gave back to us after 2 hours, so it was easy to find a really good one to use for magnets!

Cool! I totally understand that. We used photos that we took ourselves for our Save-The-Date Cards. We took 4 pictures, with us holding up different signs (like one with the wedding date, location, etc), and then formated the 4 pics to look like a photo booth picture strip. We got some great feedback on it and everyone loved the creativity. And we just used a tripod with a normal point and shoot camera.
Another idea is having an etsy artist who does cartoon portraits to draw you and use that as your “pic” for the STD. Like this designer: http://www.etsy.com/shop/NanLawson

I took our Save the date pics and I think they came out alright! Our theme is White Water Rafting so I took three stones(one that I found was Heartshaped!),wrote our names and wedding date on them with a sharpie marker, placed the stones in the river, took a picture—badda bing badda boom-we now have our save the date magnets ready to be shipped out this week!

I w ould recommend someone on Craig’s List looking to gain some experience for their photography portfolio. They would likely be really affordable (or even free!) and they might be better than trying to take the pics yourself or having a friend do it. My Fiance has an SLR camera and I find it really hard to operate sometimes!

I had a similar situation to yours…we were supposed to have our engagement photos taken but were rained out so we rescheduled for a month later. They ended up coming out gorgeous with the fall colors so it all worked out for the best and now I am in the process of ordering save the dates and hope to send them out by the New Year. I think the pictures in December will come out beautiful so I’d say wait and see how they are because if you’re paying so much for pictures, you might as well use them. Your wedding is in July so if you send them out in January or even February that’s enough time.

I had a friend of mine take our e-pics with my dslr camera! They were absolutely wonderful, and we had an awesome day with one of our very close friends!
