Depends how creative you want to be.  We used Mixbook.  In terms of when to mail them, October sounds early to me.  It depends how many people will be traveling (they are the ones who need early STDs).  Even with lots of people traveling, I think you can even do December.  Just earlier December so you don’t get mixed up with Christmas cards if your guests send/receive such things (so maybe November to avoid that?).

I used Vistaprint for our Save The Dates….Groupon always has deals where you pay $17 and get $70 worth of vistaprint merchandise. I just used them (and that deal) for our thank you cards and both our save the dates and thank you cards turned out exactly how I wanted them!

I just got married this past June and I believe I sent our save the dates in October or November.

Good Luck 🙂

@TaraSondra:  Here are the digital proofs of the front and back of our Save-The-Date Cards from Wedding Paper Divas. I crossed out the website on the front.  The proofs don’t do them full justice, because they were printed on a thick, gorgeous shimmer paper that added a subtle shine and texture to everything.  We were thrilled with the results, and I highly recommend you look at Wedding Paper Divas for Save-The-Date Cards.  They will send you free samples so you can see and feel the paper quality in person, their site has a ton of style options, the designs are easy to customize on their user friendly site, and the prices were reasonable.  We sent these out in April 2013 for our January 2014 Destination Wedding.
