Does anyone have a STD template that would work with MS Publisher? Or does anyone have a link to a good tutorial on how to make this kind of thing using that program? This is the ONLY DIY element of our wedding, and I just want it to look nice enough. I’ve never used any kind of graphic design program before and just feel completely out of my element. Thanks! Frannie.

Hi Frannie. I don’t know any tutorials but I’ll give you the advise I have. I use a Mac based software (pages) but it’s very similar to MS Publisher. The important thing to know about these types of software is that they see each piece of the design as objects. You want to think of your cards like a collage. Just like you’d cut out text and pictures for a collage you need to make a box for your text and pictures and lines and shapes. (Tip: Make as many text boxes as you want in order to put the text exactly where you want. The more text boxes you make the more freedom you have to put the text in different places. If you’re using different fonts and/or sizes, it easiest to put each font/size in it’s own box as you’ll have more control over the placement of it. Sometimes the software does strange things if you have two different fonts or sizes on the same line of text.)
Start out by drawing a square/rectangle just slightly bigger than the size you want the cards to be. That’ll give you the opportunity to trim just inside the line to give you the perfect size. Once you have your box, you can copy and paste it until you get as many as you can fit on the page. Don’t try to cram too many in though because you need to leave room around the edge for your printer margins. Once you have your boxes (i.e. home made template) then you have your canvas to work within. From there… the sky’s the limit! Work on one first because you can highlight all the elements of that one and copy/paste it into the other templates.
I designed all of our printed material and loved every single moment of it! I’m about half way though assembling the invites! Yay! Oh another tip, keep in mind that all MS programs work similarly. So if you’ve ever added a picture or drawn a line in Word it’s going to be a very similar thing… only easier. Have fun and good luck! Please let me know if you need any more help. I’d be more than happy to help as I love this stuff!

I did my STD in publisher… they are pretty simple and informal, with a space for a business card-size magnet. Let me know if you want the template!
