nila06:  They’re two different things?

I’m using my engagement pics for my STD’s, and I’ll order the STD’s in September for my May wedding.

My engagement pictures were my STD  photos… We got back nearly 300 photos and used 3 for Save-The-Date Cards and the rest for whatever we wanted…. I wouldn’t pay to do it twice… I just purposely saved my favourite 3 and didn’t post them on FB or anywhere else because I didn’t want anyone to see those ones.

nila06:  We sent out our STD’s (most of them… I found them to be unnecessary) about 10+ months before the wedding, as soon as we set the date because most people send them out around the year mark. We’re getting married in January and we haven’t done engagement pictures yet. We’re doing some in the next 2 weeks, then I think we might do some more in the fall. I think you can do the pictures whenever. I know some people who ran out and did them right away, and others who waited until like a month before they got married. Depends what season you want.

nila06:  Most people just use their engagement photos for save-the-dates…

nila06:  There’s no rule against it per se, but to me it’s a waste of money.  I’m not going to use my engagement pictures for more than STD’s and a couple nice prints to hang in the house, so it just would feel like most of the pictures would be wasted.

Do you have guests who require more than 6 months notice?  I’m planning to send my STD in October for my April wedding.  Personally, I think this is more than enough time and that those who are going to come will come regardless of whether they get the STD 6 or 12 months in advance.  Personally, I also think it’s more effective to send it 6 vs. closer to 12 months in advance as people are more likely to take note vs. dismiss the date as a long way away.  I think you’re fine to just take your engagement photos (single session) and then send your Save-The-Date Cards when you’re ready.
