For the past several years I felt s
calp pain that really hurts/feels tender to the touch for no particular reason. I rarely tie by hair and the pain is usually felt when my hair has been down. I don’t use hair products and don’t feel any physical changes to my scalp. The pain randomly comes and goes on it own. I don’t get headaches often and haven’t experienced any type of trama to my head that I can recall when it started. It’s usually felt around the crown area or on the top of my head in a small area. Anyone else experience this or know the cause?

There are quite a few things it could be (most likely not serious, but only your provider can determine that), but let’s start with the most likely. How long has this been going on overall, and how long is each “episode” of scalp tenderness- and what makes it go away? How far apart are the “episodes”? Just tenderness-or other symptoms, like itching or burning, eye tearing, headaches that occur after the tenderness? Any symptoms in the past? Are you on any medications? Have you actually had anybody look at the top of your scalp? This is probably what will tell you the most.
Any chance this could be a sunburn? More of your scalp is exposed when your hair is down. How much sun exposure do you get, and how old are you? Do you use sunscreen/wear hats when out for extended periods?
You don’t use hair products- but how about shampoos/conditioners? We can unfortunately develop delayed allergic reactions to products we’ve been using.
These are only some of the questions your doctor would ask you- and it’s really hard to help when we can’t look at your scalp. You’ll get the best answers if you actually go in and have it looked at. Might be easier than typing all of it out. 😉
