Hi there!

It’s great to start thinking ahead. And the good news is that you’ve got a good few months to let your body sort itself out off of BC and see what happens. Some women come off the pill and have regular cycles immediately; some don’t. If you don’t already, I would suggest making note of your menstrual cycles so that you’re better equipped with information when  the time comes.

You can also get into more hard-core temp charting and what-not, but if you’re just getting prepped, tracking your cycle and watching out for signs of ovulation would be a good start. You might also like to start taking pre-natal vitamins, too. All personal preference! Definitely pop into the TTC boards whenever you need anything – the guys here are fantastic. 🙂

Yup.  There’s no way of knowing what to expect.  You might to back to what is normal for you (or your new normal), you might be wonky (sometimes for as long as 6 months to a year, from what I’ve read).  You also might discover that BCP were masking some other issue.

My anecdotal evidence: on the pill 10.5 years.  I’ve been off for almost 2 months and nothing has happened cycle-wise.  I used to have regular cycles.  Now, my body doesn’t know what to do.  I have no other symptoms of any other issues, like PCOS, etc. I’m really happy that I’ve been temping during this time.  This way I know I’m not pregnant (haven’t ovulated) and I don’t have to worry about it or take tons of expensive tests.

You are smart to go off now if you want to TTC this year.  Good luck!

I was on the pill for about 8.5 years because of irregular cycles. Once I came off, my cycles actually became regular. But other than the change in my cycles, I didn’t notice any other changes that weren’t present before. Good Luck on your TTC journey!

@Cori14: I was on the pill for two years. Expect to be very frisky! Your sex drive will be crazy. Outside of that everything was normal, oh yeah my cycle was heavier again. They were like this pre BC.

I just came off of BCP this cycle after being various forms of hormonal birth control (depo, nuvaring, ortho tri-cyclen) on and off for 11 years.  I got the book Taking Charge of Your Fertility on the recommendation of some other Bees here.  I started chartng my temps and cervical mucus and fortunately I ovulated on my first cycle!  From what I hear though, that isn’t the norm – it seems to take most women a few cycles to regulate.  I am also able to use the information in my chart to know when I’m fertile and we should use a condom as we are still avoiding pregnancy for a few more months.

I will tell you that I had a lot of weird symptoms during the first 2 weeks after stopping the pill.  On the bad side I was extremely emotional for the first week (like a very bad case of PMS), had night sweats, frequent urination, and headaches.  On the plus side, I’ve lost some water weight and my appetite is reduced (especially cravings for sweets).

I defintely recommend the book Taking Charge of Your Fertility.  You can also use their website tcoyf.com to chart your cycles for free.  It’s very empowering to know that when we are ready, I will know the right time to try each month.  Congratulations on your upcoming wedding and good luck on your TTC journey!

Hi Cori14! I was on the pill for 15 years and took my last pack late October.  November 6 would have been Day 1 of a new pack.  Those first few days really freaked me out.  I felt really anxious, as though my mind was racing.  I thought I was going crazy!  Also, my skin broke out (that’s back to normal now, thank goodness!)  The second week of November, I had the most insane cramps (at the airport at that!) and breasts so sore I had to hug them close with my arms.   I got my period November 18, so three weeks after stopping the pill. According to ovulation predictor tests I am ovulating.  I can tell when I’m going to get a positive reading on tests because I can feel an ache in my ovary around day 12 of my cycle.  My cycles are still not regular but hopefully they will soon.  My doctor warned me it would be a few months before they did.  good luck!

I second the skin breaking out!  It happen for me about one month after getting off BC. It calmed down a bit, but now even a year and a half later my skin is different than the 11 years I was on BCP.  Oilier.

My cycles were a bit scattered, but evened out after a while.  But I’m pretty sure I started ovulating right away.

I reached out here on the bee after coming off, because I had a little bit of depression and found out that it was quite normal. Not fun, but normal.

I was on the bill for 6 years, and when I came off of it, I didnt get a period for 13 months. My ob/gyn said it was normal and it can take a long time for your cycles to become regular again.
