I am currently scared as hell because I have to take the plane in 8 days. I am going to France with my boyfriend and my parents. There are a few things that makes me anxious in this trip. First, I was not scared of the plane the 10 first times I took a plane but in 2011, we went to Portugal and there was a storm and we went trough 2 hours of non-stop turbulences after take off and my boyfriend totally freaked out, he was so scared and I was scared because he was. Since that trip I am more nervous when I take the plane.
But this time, it is worse because my parents (who took a plane only once before) will be there too and I know they are scared of the plane too (my father cried the only time he took the plane) so I feel I have to be strong for them, to show the example, but I am not. I looked at the forecast and they announce another storm for next wednesday so it makes me even more stressed out.
We planned this trip 3 years ago, I was looking forward to it, but my boyfriend had an argument with my parents last may and now I fear everything will go wrong. I feel responsible and I will feel so bad if those people I love more than everything don’t like the trip or are scared in the plane. Any advice for the situation?

@Black_bird: Can you phone your doctor and explain, and ask for a very small prescription of some kind of calming medication? If not, could you possibly take a benadryl as you’re about to board? It would make you sleepy and that might help. You could practice some relaxation breathing in advance, maybe? If the weather makes flying unsafe, they will definitely postpone the flight… remember that the captain and flight attendants are up and down in planes all day every day, and they’re okay. You will be okay too!

Thank you for the tip, Jijitattoo, I guess I could take some medication but I want to be there for my parents, I don’t wan’t to be sleeping if they are scared even if I Know I cannot be that helpful. I don’t want them to feel I let them down.
You ar right, the captain want to be safe too, but I don’t want to live that flight with 2 hours of turbulences once again (everyone was sick, the smell was terrible and the crew didn’t have the chance to give us our meal…) Maybe it was not dangerous, but it was sooo scary.

@Black_bird: Yes call your doc. You can get some Xanax. It does not put you to sleep.
My mom takes it. You cannot help anyone if you’re not in a stable state and drugs can do that.
Actually have the whole family take some Xanax!
