I am sick and thus know that I should leave work. I am just finding it really hard to work up the courage to pack my stuff for the day even though I know that I need to do it.
Why am I having this issue? Because so far I have only been in the office 1 day this week (wednesday) due to an out of town project on Monday/Tuesday and realising yesterday that I was sick enough to warrant going to the health clinic. I have a ton of work to do for the out of town project wrap up, an uber important meeting on Monday (which, thank God, was moved from yesterday to Monday) and a whole slew of other projects that have cropped up over the holiday. To make things worse? I have no vacation/sick days left! I used up all of my vacation days to take my honeymoon in August! I just broke even this pay period with vacation days accrued/taken only to take yesterday off for being sick.
Bees, what should I do? I got a note from the doctor yesterday that said I would return to work on Monday 6 December, but my boss didn’t even want to see the note. I really don’t feel well but I also feel obligated to get this work done. Help?

Could you work from home? Maybe that will appease your boss?

Are you able to go home and rest today – and then maybe come in to catch up this weekend?
Hope you feel better!

can you work from home? you also don’t want to get others sick. maybe you can get the work done over the weekend when you’re feeling better, or work longer hours next week? take care of yourself, and i hope you feel better soon!

In theory, I can do this type of work from home. In practice? Feeling the way that I do I don’t think that I am going to be able to accomplish anything at home today other than sleeping.
I really don’t want to get anyone else sick, but I am not even sure of the proper etiquette for leaving work early!

Humm..if you’re sick you’re sick, but I personally wouldn’t take an unpaid sick day. A lot of companies see that as an abuse of time.

I would let your boss know that while your Dr doesn’t want you back at work until Monday, you’d like to work at home so you can recover while preventing spreading your illness and still get everything ready for Monday. Even if they’re not thrilled you’re at home, I think they’d rather keep everyone else healthy. Keep your phone on you and you email up, and get rest when you need to, just spread the work throughout the day/evening if you can. *Feel better!*

I second flamingred
, my boss would rather me go home and get better than be pitiful at work and risk infecting other people. Take your stuff with you and if you’re feeling better on Saturday or Sunday you can work on it – just go home and rest for today!

can you take advance sick leave?

Proper ettiquette is that if you are sick enough to get other people work or to make other people uncomfortable you need to leave. If you are that sick, likely other people will recognize it and will have no problem with you asking.
I understand about feeling bad, but go to your boss and say that you feel horrible but that you just can’t make it through the day and that you know you have XYZ to get done and promise to get it done this weekend because you are just too ill to do it properly today.
