I know some people have already posted about issues with finding good plus-sized dresses, but I am seriously DREADING the day I have to go look for a dress. Everyone looks so beautiful on all of these boards, but I feel like I’m going to look like a whale. I live in STL, and while there is a boutique here or there that have bigger samples, I’m having a hard time finding some of the great designers of plus-sized dresses. Does anyone have any suggestions on where in STL I can find a plethora of plus-sized dresses?

David’s bridal has a lot of dresses in plus size!

Alfred Angelo and any place that carry Mori Lee! You’re going to look beautiful! I was in the same mind frame when I started looking. I’ve always dreamed of a ball gown but convinced myself more dress wasn’t going to work with my body!
I tried on a bunch and when I finally decided to give my dream ball gown a try to rule it out it was perfect and I fell in love instantly! My dress is Alfred Angelo 205
Don’t limit the styles or shilloutetes you will try on and go in with an open mind! You’ll be happily surprised 🙂

@MissBatman: ugh me too.. I’m on the verge of plus sized… I think (12-14). I am not comfortable at ALL trying on dressing and think I look awful in everything! I have been putting it off and trying to lose some weight but I’m running out of time!

@MissBatman: Hey fellow St. Louisan 🙂 I am on the plus sized end as well. I’ve gone a few places and honestly, only one place made me feel bad. The lady at Robin’s kinda would say stuff like ‘oh that won’t fit’ blah blah. So I wouldn’t recommend there. I tried on stuff on at Clarices, the Ultimate Bride and David’s and it was fine. I think you need to go in knowing that the dresses aren’t going to fit because bridal sizes are already small! But the girl at Clarice’s got me into most of the dresses and just kinda clamped them in places so it looked right. I’m going to Blossoms Bridal next week. Their website says they have plus sizes specifically and carry Casablanca, Allure, Mori Lee, etc. I can let you know about their selection and if it’s worth a trip!

Good luck! You’ll be fine. Just go to a large place and not a boutique.
I had the worst possible thing happen to me* and you know what? After a few days, I thought it was the funniest thing in the world.
Just try on every style you can to see what flatters you. Once you have a sillouette you like, then start narrowing it down. I was always scared to try on dresses. I’m large (16) but I have giant boobs and I was terrified I’d have to settle for a white muumuu because nothing would fit over them. You’ll find the right one! Just smile and try to enjoy the experience. I was as terrified as you until I discovered that they DO have larger sizes.
*I got stuck in a dress for about half an hour. For more, go look at the old thread I made, it’s pretty funny actually.

If there is one thing I have learned through trying on dresses myself and all the bridal shows I watch, it’s that no matter what you look like, there is a dress for you!!!
All the bridal salons know every single body type and knows what flatters you. I mean, I haven’t seen one that doesn’t. So rest assured, they will help you look and feel your best. 🙂
The other thing I would suggest, is to go with your gut. Not your mom’s, best friend or even consultant (if it doesn’t resonate with you)…because ultimately I think deep down we all know. When I was trying on dresses, I did stay open minded and tried on things I didn’t feel I would like but only to rule fabric or necklines or price. Deep down I just knew what would work would involve lace. I tried on a ball gown that my mom loved. And it felt neat, as in something so different than anything I would ever wear, but it wasn’t “me”. Everyone thought it looked gorgeous, but for me, it just didn’t work.
Then I went to another salon and described my personal vision. And BAM. She nailed it on the first dress! And my mom likes it. Likely because I feel beautiful in it! And it is exactly my “look” I wanted.
Lastly, take some Spanxx or control wear with you! Most brides need it! Seriously! Don’t think there is anything wrong with you for taking it.

I am a 12-14 sized gal, and let me tell you, I was DREADING wedding gown shopping. DREADING IT to the point that I wanted to cry anytime I passed a gown shop.
I started by going to a random shop with my best friend on a whim. I let the sales associate pick out a few that she honestly felt would look good on me. Low and behold, they all did. She told me that as I had a smaller waist and fuller hips (and no boobs whatsoever), that i needed a ball gown or something that flared at the waist. The dress I ultimately chose is fitted at the top and flares out at the waist. I never allowed myself to try on a dress that was mermaid or drop waisted because realistically, my body would never look good in that. Just because you are plus sized doesn’t mean that you don’t have anything to accentuate. Do you have an hourglass figure? (If so, I am SO jealous.) Find an associate at the store who will honestly listen to YOU and help YOU to look your best.
This is my gown!

I’m plus sized, and I wore an Alfred Angelo dress. Honestly, I hated ALL of the DB dresses I tried on (they weren’t 100% flattering on my figure), but I felt beautiful in all of the AA dresses I tried on. Definitely check them out.
Make sure to give yourself a pep talk and realize how BEAUTIFUL you are and just how amazing your Fiance knows you are. He wouldn’t be marrying you if you weren’t the most beauitful girl in the world to him!!!
This is my AA dress, but they had several others that were flattering on my size 22 butt!

I found that Maggie Sottero has plus size samples and even some smaller sized samples I could fit over my head because they had a higher waist. Try to stick with those types of styles and you will be fine!!!
