I just got a call from my neighbor letting me know that an intruder entered their house this morning in broad daylight through a door that wasn’t locked/latched properly and stole a bunch of jewelry!
Our neighbor’s son was home at the time (but he’s 15 and has no car, so there were no cars in the driveway), but went undetected (since he was in his locked bedroom being a pukey teenager) and was able to discretely get a glimpse/description of the intruder and the truck he left in.
After the intruder left and the son locked the doors up tight and called the police, the truck CAME BACK, this time with a second person – likely to steal the TV or something that would require two people. Once they realized the door was locked this time, they took off, just before the police arrived.
My neighbors checked our doors to ensure they were all locked and gave us a call, but that’s pretty crazy! My husband is always telling me to lock the door when I’m home alone, and I guess he is right on this one!

Yes, always lock your door when you are home! Allow me to scare the crap out of you: this lady was in her house with the doors unlocked (and this was a very upscale neighborhood) and this random freaky guy walked right in her back door and killed her in the bathroom while her child watched. True story. Lock your doors always. Windows too, for that matter.

@Mrs.Argentina – we live in a really quiet residential area of our city! I’m so glad the kid is okay and was able to get a description, you can bet I’ll be keeping an eye out for that truck in our neighborhood!
Sidebar, I just texted my husband to tell him about it, and his response? “See, this is why I tell you to lock the door when you’re home!” … d’oh!

@2ndtimeacharm – Yeah, I grew up in the woods, we never locked our doors even at night. We didn’t lock our cars in our driveway, never thought about it! My husband grew up in the city, and is very careful to always lock up!

@MrsEstep – it’s funny you say that about the shower – that’s the ONLY time I ever think to lock the door when I’m home alone! I guess my line of thought is that with the water running, I wouldn’t hear an intruder… that, and I’ve seen too many horror movies where the protagonist ends up dead in the shower – who wants to die nekkid?!

That’s terrible! Yeah, I lock my doors all the time. We have some shady people around here anyways, it’s just a good habit to get into. That must have been pretty scary for the kid!

@7SEVENJ9: I know exactly what you mean. I grew up in LA and I locked everything, including my car doors at all times (people would car-jack you at red lights) and you can never let your guard down for a single minute.
Now I live in Maine where my husband grew up (and is probably similar to where you grew up) and I never have to worry. We go away for the weekend and leave our doors unlocked. Kinda nice.
But that’s really scary having a neighbor burglarized during the day. Or ever. At least it wasn’t you and it was a good warning.

Oh my gosh! Scary! I wouldn’t be able to sleep after that! You sound so brave. I live in a very large apartment building, and when my Fiance is gone (camping with his silly friends or whatever) for the night, I hear all sorts of sounds and am always jumping. When the neighbors come home and open their door, I am always thinking, “Ahh! A door opening! They’re going to kill me!” I dunno, maybe that’s just me… And yes, I ALWAYS check my front door and then lock my bathroom door tight when I shower. And, I have to leave the shower curtain open halfway when I’m home alone. Just in case they come in and I can, maybe, hear them or… something… 🙂

I am soo paranoid about this. We just moved into a house and I seriously check the doors 10 times before bed, when we get home, when we leave, when Fiance leaves for work in the morning. Actually, I just got up and checked all the doors again 🙂 lol. Luckily, we seem to have some awesome neighbors and one of them is almost always home and they all hang out in their driveways so it seems like people really look out for each other here. Kind of nice to know.

Yeah, I always lock the doors and car doors too for the reasons 2ndtimeacharm mentioned.

@sunny1 – I get home about two hours earlier than my husband most days, and I usually just go in, get ready to do my workout, and don’t give locking the door a second thought… I lock the door when I shower, and maybe if it’s getting late and I’m home alone. My hubby just emailed me saying he wants me to check all three doors before I go into the house today, just to be on the safe side… The timing of this is pretty crap, considering we’re going on vacation next week and are leaving the house empty for a week. Fortunately, we have people bringing in our mail and checking on the house, but this was at 10am on a weekday! Those are some brazen burglars!

Wow that is nuts!!
This may be one of the reasons we have dogs. Big scary dogs who don’t like strangers. I’m comfortable enough having the dogs there to tell me if something isn’t right. The poor Orkin man tried going into the backyard without knocking on the door first…he got the scare of his life. The dogs heard him open the side gate and ran outside and chased him down the block. I found him on top of a car. 🙂
Burglars don’t scare me anymore now, just crazy psycho killers.
