The type of tie (if, indeed, a tie is worn at all) worn with a kilt has to do with the formality of the event – at least in how the royal family wears them. In other words, for a more casual event, Charles or Phillp may wear a shirt and sweater with a kilt. For standard dress occasions, they wear regular ties; for formal events, they wear bow ties. The tie can match the tartan or it can coordinate, just as a man would coordinate a regular tie with a standard outfit. For formal events, it is common for a man wearing a kilt to wear a black bow tie.

echomomm :  exactly. Bow tie if it suits a black tie event. Usually evening. Very formal with a high level of hosting.

Id say tie for wedding unless your dress code is black tie.
