I scrapbook all the time and love to use chalk on my pages.  It really softens the paper and blends the edges together.  I dont like using actual chalk because you need a spray to set it so it doesnt rub all over the place.  I use chalk ink (aka fluid chalk) that comes in different colors on individual pads.  I use the Colorbox brand "Cats Eye".  They sell them at scrapbooking stores, Joann’s, etc.  Here is a link so you can see what they look like:

Yep you just rub it right on the edges of the page.  They look really dark on the inkpad but it comes out really smooth and nice.  I use a light brown (cant think of the exact color name) for alot of my stuff and it blends very nicely with almost any color paper.
