My finger is really small, so after Fiance gave it to me we had to get an entirely new band made. A little bit after I picked it up I noticed a speck of dirt, but figured I would just take it back for a cleaning eventually.
Fast forward a few months, and I realized that little ‘speck’ that I thought was dirt was actually a scratch!! The stratch is actually pretty big, but it’s on the side, and there’s a couple of small black specks within it (which is why I mistook it for being dirty originally). I had no idea that diamonds could even get damage like that – and my only thought is that they did it when they sent it out and maybe nicked it with whatever tools they use.
So, my questoin is: has anybody had any damage to their ring like this? If so, what happened? I’m worried that the store will claim it wasn’t them since they gave me back my ring so long ago. Fiance claims he got it insured at the store, but when I asked today if it was appraised, he said he didn’t think so – so now I’m worried he got ‘warranty’ and ‘insurance’ confused. *forehead slap*

Are you sure the little black specks you are describing are not crystals due to the clarity of the diamond?

@cejo13: I had a moment of this thought too, after I got my ring back after sizing! I noticed a small scratch that I hadn’t seen before, and for a bit I convinced myself that the store must have done something while they had it!! But, I don’t think you can damage a diamond very easily. I brought it up to my fiance, and he said that it had been there when he bought it – he went for a slightly flawed diamond in favor of a good cut and carat. I just hadn’t noticed it in the few short days I had it before taking it in for sizing! So I wonder if these are slight inclusions in the diamond that were always there. No problem though, most people can’t see these with the naked eye. We actually went back and looked at some less flawed ones, but I like mine better, so he did good!
Maybe ask your fiance if he noticed those things before? He should have had an opportunity to look at the diamond under the scope and they should have pointed them out for him. Just make sure to reassure him that you’re not bothered by them! Don’t want him to feel like it’s not good enough for ya 😉

Thanks for the help – he said he doesn’t think it was there when he looked under the scope but you never know with him – haha. I am almost positive though the black specks weren’t there before I got my new band – I might’ve missed the scratch at first but these are much harder to miss. I suppose it is possible though.
If they are just imperfections, I wouldn’t mind in the least, I just want to make sure. Fiance spent a lot of money he didn’t have to get me a nice ring and I’d hate for anything to happen to it.

I am confused. Where is the scratch, on the metal or on the stone? The black specks sound like carbon spots in your diamond. If they don’t come off in the ultrasonic or steamer, they were probably just always there and you never noticed. If you have spots on your metal, it c ould be porosity in the metal, which means it wan’t made well. Just a scratch in the metal can be buffed out.

In the stone.
Thanks for talking me down everybody. 🙂 I’m hoping you’re all right and it’s just something I missed.

the diamond shouldnt scratch or chip, at least not easily. Take it to a jeweller & ask them.
